My question didn't make it into the podcast. Very disappointing. Dr. Ken needs to explain why he's protecting Drinky and Larry. Think about it. Why else would he ignore my question? It's to protect Larry and Drinky. He can't risk his access to score personalities like Parkins and Mac. So he filters the questions. That must be it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that the term was used to denigrate those whose whole identity is wrapped up in social justice, if only as a means to signal their own virtue or win the "Oppression Olympics". It's not that railing against SJW's is meant to rail against equality, but rather that MANY of these "warriors" are only outraged when it suits them and their cause. They're not really interested in equality, they're interested in being seen calling for equality.

Your time on the couch with Dr. Ken was better than Parkins. Both were a little long. But your explanations were more thought out. Parkins was a bit too aggressive, and kind of missed an opportunity there. He still did fine with the question, just came more more defensive than I think he needed to be.

Overall really fun listen.

Well you have to remember Dr. Ken is not a polished Duke grad capable of asking the tough questions and following up.

The best examination of the social justice movement and its excesses is Mark Fisher's "Exiting the Vampires' Castle," and everyone should make sure to read it if they haven't already. Four years ago, he correctly identified them all as handmaidens of the ruling class who are too concerned with fighting among themselves for personal advancement to achieve genuine solidarity. Sound like anyone we know?

Quote:
The Vampires’ Castle specialises in propagating guilt. It is driven by a priest’s desire to excommunicate and condemn, an academic-pedant’s desire to be the first to be seen to spot a mistake, and a hipster’s desire to be one of the in-crowd. The danger in attacking the Vampires’ Castle is that it can look as if – and it will do everything it can to reinforce this thought – that one is also attacking the struggles against racism, sexism, heterosexism. But, far from being the only legitimate expression of such struggles, the Vampires’ Castle is best understood as a bourgeois-liberal perversion and appropriation of the energy of these movements. The Vampires’ Castle was born the moment when the struggle not to be defined by identitarian categories became the quest to have ‘identities’ recognised by a bourgeois big Other.

Quote:
While in theory it claims to be in favour of structural critique, in practice it never focuses on anything except individual behaviour. Some of these working class types are not terribly well brought up, and can be very rude at times. Remember: condemning individuals is always more important than paying attention to impersonal structures. The actual ruling class propagates ideologies of individualism, while tending to act as a class. (Many of what we call ‘conspiracies’ are the ruling class showing class solidarity.) The VC, as dupe-servants of the ruling class, does the opposite: it pays lip service to ‘solidarity’ and ‘collectivity’, while always acting as if the individualist categories imposed by power really hold. Because they are petit-bourgeois to the core, the members of the Vampires’ Castle are intensely competitive, but this is repressed in the passive aggressive manner typical of the bourgeoisie. What holds them together is not solidarity, but mutual fear – the fear that they will be the next one to be outed, exposed, condemned.

Fisher has since committed suicide but I would like to think he'd be pleased with the small steps in the right direction that we're seeing, i.e. the return to form of the Labour Party.

Very interesting, but also very British. It seems to me that the British working class is much more anti-immigrant than anything we have in the U.S. There's a entire set of British politics of which I have very little understanding. I gather vague references to it in the English music. And I recently read a book wherein the author associated chalk downlands with British nationalism, unless I completely misunderstood what she was trying to say. Again, it was very vague and I lack a basis for understanding.

Good show.

Parkins was good but aggressive. Kind of a "feeling out" session.

Parkins, if you're reading, join the board. This is your target demographic.

I saw a little of that with Morrissey in the wake of the Manchester murders. Lots of people were freaking out and calling him a hatemongering right-wing lunatic, but Moz has always been far to the left, so far to the left that he thinks Britain should abolish the monarchy. He also happens to believe that Pakistanis should stop ruining his country. Somehow he reconciles this with not only his leftism but with his status as a child of Irish immigrants. He can't be the only one. That sort of National Front Leftism is possible over there but doesn't really work here (though the Hillary Men certainly tried to will it into being by implying white supremacism among Bernie's supporters).

I've got a long drive on Tuesday. I'm looking forward to listening then.

Also, good stuff from W_Z. I'm bringing a giant bottle of ketchup to the next board outing.
