Resident Movie & Entertainment expert Wheaton Zack rejoins the podcast for a very special one-off movie ranking of the following films -

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek: Generations

Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: Insurrection

Star Trek: Nemesis

Star Trek

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Beyond

Yes, I feel very nerdy. It's good stuff, though, you should listen.

I so wanted to drop in the Breaking Bad Badger & Skinny Pete Star Trek "script".

I just couldn't figure out a spot where it would work.

I just gotta write it down is all.

yeah you do not at all need to see 1 to understand the rest of the films. 2 and 3 are kind of connected, but 4, 5, and 6 are also standalone films that you could watch in any order.

I think the 1st movie just needs to be destroyed as well as 5.

Yup.

You could really piss on any of the odd movies from the original 6.

The same rule could also apply to the TNG movies.
Generations - Bad
First Contact - Good
Insurrection - OMG really fucking bad
Nemesis - Decent, but not bad.

Having seen many of these only a few times and often a long time ago, I need a refresher before listening to a podcast such as this. I had a dorm room friend at UIUC that was a massive TNG fan, which gave me the all clear that it was ok to watch Star Trek with friends. Before that it was simply a guilty pleasure.

Ruffie, and Troi wore that uniform well, if you know what I mean

Generations was Shatner not wanting to let go.
First Contact was gold.
Insurrection was decent, nothing fantastic.
Nemesis was like WTF are you doing.

I think the Director's Cut for TMP is actually a decent Star Trek movie. If you are looking at Star Trek as Gene Roddenberry's examination of the human experience, then it nails it.

I'll be the 1st to admit they borrow a bit from 2001, but it's still a great movie and that sequence when they unveil the refit configuration of the Constitution Class NCC-1701 is porn for Trekkies. Best looking ship in Star Trek, no doubt.

Generations was worse than that, it was lazy writing. The entire sequence of the destruction of the Enterprise D was insulting to fans. Here is how the script should've gone:

"oh my god they found a way to penetrate our shields."

"Let's sit here and talk for 5 minutes about some stupid plasma coil when we could instead launch a full spread of 10 photo torpedoes and take that Bird of Prey down in a single salvo."

"Oh and while we're doing that, let's not remodulate our shield harmonics even though it's the 1st thing we do when anyone else fires a shot through our fully raised shields."

"Great idea, let's do that, but make sure they breach the warp core before we fire our return shot. Rick Berman wants to give us a new ship for the next movie so we need to shit all over the fans who fell in love with this ship over the last 7 years first."

I strongly suggest watching these reviews of the 4 TNG films

http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-trek/

This is the same guy who shredded the Star Wars prequels (although the TNG film reviews came 1st)

The only ones I ever seen were the one with Herve Villechaize (from Fantasy Island) and his merry band of violent Swedish hippies and the one with the whales and the decently hot milf.

Montalban had an amazing voice, didn't he? I heard he was a great guy to boot, active in the community.

As a self proclaimed Trekkie, here is my ranking

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek: Beyond (captures the essence of Star Trek well)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (director's cut only)
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Star Trek (2009 reboot)
Star Trek: First Contact
------- (this line break separates good Star Trek from bad Star Trek)
Star Trek: Insurrection (The Dominion War is ongoing so they try to do this story? Give us a damn Dominion War story! Also, Picard had no problem evicting the Native Americans in TNG from what became the maquis worlds)
Star Trek: Into Darkness (awful remake of The Wrath of Khan, only ranks 9 because Star Trek can get even worse than this drek)
Star Trek: Nemesis (Star Trek X: The Wrath of Shinzon)
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (although this film may have been salvagable if Shatner doesn't direct, ILM does the effects, and the WGA strike didn't lead to rushed script.

I have seen all the movies, but I really only have strong memories of the Khan and the Voyage home. The rest just seem to run together. I may need to do a marathon viewing session.

I think all of them were good in one way or another. It Voyage Home was great to me. Also that should have been the last of the original cast movies.

There's always been a certain to charm to all things Star Trek where even the low quality tv episodes are still decent enough to consume. I think the entire movie series was done a disservice solely because the tv series were so good for die hard Trekkies.

I watch the reruns on BBC America for some unknown reason. Cheesy.

Lot's of people hating on Nemesis. I'll admit it wasn't great, but i would rank it 2nd best of the TNG movies. Insurrection was like a bad episode from the series. It felt like a double episode storyline they passed on at some point during the 7 seasons, and decided to make a major motion picture about it instead. Just bad.

The problem for the movies is that the tv shows were all so good. Each episode is like a mini movie. To me, only Kahn and Voyage Home really exceed the tv shows by a wide margin.

Nemesis was just an awful remake of The Wrath of Khan without any heart or cleverness to the story.

Shinzon was dumb.

They could've made a great Romulan film with Sela making an appearance and could've not done B4 and instead brought back Lore. Lore working with Sela and the Romulans would be a revenge plot that made sense.

Having Shinzon seek revenge against Picard who did nothing to him was dumb. Heck, the entire character was awful. How does he become leader of the Remans? Seriously, why did we even need the Remans? Aren't the diabolical Romulans with their Warbirds dangerous enough? I mean in the TV show we're led to believe that the Galaxy Class Enterprise D would be out gunned vs. a single Warbird.

Also, Data's death was just pointless. Spock's at least served a point.

In closing, fuck you Rick Berman, you lazy piece of shit who ruined the TNG movies.

But still Nemesis > Insurrection.

Special effects wise, no doubt. At least Nemesis had some eye candy of a space battle, but as a Star Trek story, Insurrection is better. Granted, this is all relative as all of the TNG films outside of First Contact have aged poorly.

Insurrection is very flawed, but I found it a bit less offensive as a Trek story than Nemesis. I will say Insurrection was a major lost opportunity.

It's happening during the same timeline as the Dominion War so we should've instead had a great Dominion War story on the big screen. Heck, cross it over with DS9, which was in season 6/7. Sisko and Picard would be great together.

Ooops, said this already. Must be the Alzheimer's. I have seen 5 of the 6.I never saw the first one and still don't intend to. I have enjoyed just about every Trek movie made, even the new ones. I'm surprised TNG Borg movie is not well received on here.I thought it was pretty creepy and had some tense moments.
