Ha, let's say I grew up playing Intelevision, Commodore 64 games at home and Atari games at the neighbors. But so did every kid growing up in the 80s. But I play minimally these days, as they are ultimately time wasters, as is posting on CSFMB! :) My game is mainly competitive chess. Still, it's fascinating to see what companies like EA and Activision are putting out now compared to back in the day. I mean, after playing COD 4 just a little bit, I caught myself dreaming about the game.

My only complaint about CoD4 are the helli's and bomb strikes, when you're just getting destroyed left and right. Otherwise, great game.

After some additional pondering on the subject this game came to mind as a close second for me. Loved it
because much like Contra my brother and I could play at the same time, although I thought this came was
much better and more fun than Contra.

good call T-bone, I remember loving that game.

Tough to come up with a favorite so I'll try and do it by systems I have owned. Some of these might not even be for the system I list since its so long ago.

Pong: Pong
Atari: Adventure
Nintendo: Tecmo Super Bowl
Coleco Vision: Defender
Sega Genesis: NHL 94
Nintendo GameCube: Resident Evil 4
PS2: Tie: Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal & Winning Eleven 7
XBOX: Forza Motorsport
XBOX 360: Borderlands 2
PS3: Infamous
XBOX ONE: Grand Theft Auto 5 (pretty sad that the best game is just an update of an older game)
PS4: Pro Evolution Soccer 2015

yea, pretty ironic for a guy who likes as few games as I do. The doubling up of XBOX/PS is a bit redundant and looking back, completely unnecessary. My XBOX ONE hasn't been turned on in 2015.

Shakes is still one of the few left who can't accept that Fifa is far superior to PES now.

Yep, definitely one of the "few". here's a couple reviews, calls them pretty much equal with the edge going to FIFA in bells and whistles and the edge going to PES in gameplay. That's pretty much the consensus of all reviews. FIFA gets good reviews because of licensing and game modes and all the bells and whistles and then all the reviewers acknowledge that when it comes to actually playing the game the clear edge goes to PES.

Call me crazy, but I prefer to PLAY the game that PLAYS the best, don't really give a shit if it has the actual 4th division Swiss league accurately represented.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/pes-2015-vs-fifa-15

http://features.en.softonic.com/fifa-15-vs-pes-2015-comparison

Also, looking at Metacritic both games scored identical scores.

So hardly a case of me being in the minority.

The only minority PES fans are in is in sales numbers, but that's hardly proven to be an indicator quality throughout the history of mankind.

I would bet quite a bit that you've never even played PES 15.

I'm quite happy being in the minority along wtih the other hardcore gameplay fanatics. You can stay in your corner with the casual gamers who only care that Ronaldo's hair is 100% accurate.

FIFA's playability has gone downhill the last few WC games which was what i really got into more than the annual game. WC06 is one of my favorite sports games of all time.

FIFA subscribes to the typical EA philosophy. When there's a problem in the gameplay the solution is to add another jersey option or more balls and shoes.

PES had a few down years on the PS3 and they went ahead and rebuilt the whole engine from scratch. PES 15 is amazing, best game they've ever produced IMO.

Smurfs was for Colecovision was really fun. Turbo was also fun.

Bomb Squad for Intellivision with Intellivoice was fun, too.

I used to like Joust on the Atari 5200.

We had most of the games, but not that one. I played tons of "Sea Battle" against my father and "Major League Baseball" against my brother. But Intellivision didn't keep up with the other platforms, like Atari that had Pacman and other cool arcade games. I ultimately gave it up for Commodore 64 and 128 games on floppy disc that I would trade for.

You hit on one of the best early arcade and console games for sure in Defender. It rocked.

Another really good arcade game was Front Line. But the console version of it I remember being weak. That might have been the first military first-person shooter.

I have still yet to see a really good D&D 3D game made, though I can't say I've ever played Everquest or one of those games you have to pay for online. For me the closest one has come is called "Blade of Darkness" for PC. Came out probably more than 10 years ago. Had good graphics for the time.

My favorite game of all time is the original arcade Space Invaders or Space Invaders Deluxe. The original really kicked off the arcade boom of my youth. I became one of the better players in the area, although I could never beat a woman named Silver Sue who owned her own arcade on Clark Street.

I got my start playing at Herm's Palace on Dempster. I lived right on the Evanston/Skokie border and it was a short walk from my house. First, some background on Herm's Palace. When I was a little kid there was a great little hot dog stand on Dempster, I think between Crain and St. Louis. It was called Big Herm's and was owned and operated by a big garrulous motherfucker named Herm. It was just a little shack with no seating and all they sold was hot dogs, fries, and tamales. It did giant business. My stepfather and Herm hit it off and Herm began purchasing stolen meat from my stepfather, not for the hot dog stand but for his own personal use. Herm sold the stand to a little old guy named Johnny. They signed a deal stating that Herm could not use the name "Big Herm's". Several months later Herm set up shop right down the street in a much larger building. Not only did he sell hot dogs, but also burgers, Italian beef, etc. He called the place Herm's Palace. That pretty much killed the original Big Herm's. Johnny was beside himself. One day the stand burned down. That was the first time I ever heard the term "Jewish lightning".

Eventually, a young couple with a bunch of young sons bought Herm's Palace. The husband was a big dude named Ricky and the wife was a cute little chick with tight red curls and huge boobs named Marla. She was in the regular rotation of a young JORR's masturbation fantasies. The oldest son was younger than I am, but we attended the same school. I think he runs the place to this day. So anyway, one day they put in a couple video games and a pinball machine. My friends and I were ecstatic. We were pinball fanatics. But the game they had wasn't a Bally game and we quickly gravitated to this new Space Invaders machine. We started to figure out how to play and began getting pretty good at clearing racks. The game is all patterns and after playing awhile you instinctively knew when the invaders were going to fire and when your cannon would "misfire". Still, we would see the high scores and we would never get close to them.

Then one day I was in Herm's Palace by myself and there was a kid playing Space Invaders who was a couple years younger than I. I noticed he was putting up huge scores so I began to watch what he was doing. I quickly saw that every time he hit the mystery ship he scored the maximum 200 points. He explained to me that the mystery ship scores were based upon how many shots you had fired. You need to hit the ship with your 22nd shot and then every 14th shot after that and you would always score the 200. Suddenly, I was the best player in the neighborhood. I didn't tell my friends about the mystery ship for awhile.

One day I walked into Herm's Palace and there was a little cardboard sign on the Space Invaders machine that said, "SCORE 2500, Win $1.00". That was an impossible score for most people, but I could do it in my sleep. I never scored less than 2500. So I put in my quarter, played the game, scored over 2500, and went to get Ricky to show him. He seem surprised and got me a buck from the register. I played again and scored over 2500 again. This was great. I was making 75 cents every time I played. The fourth time I scored over 2500 and asked Ricky for my dollar, he walked over and pulled down the sign. I said, "That's great, but you still owe me the buck." He refused to pay. I guess that sonuvabitch was unfamiliar with Carlill v. Carbolic Smokeball, Inc.
