my kid can't hit either way, so not sure what the downside is.

I'm left-handed. Never bothered. In retrospect, it seems like a bad idea since I'm extremely left-eye dominant.

How old is he?

Soft toss and tee work is usually good for the beginners.

he's 9. we are doing various things. Will be heading to batting cages this weekend. First year he's played. made the age cutoff by 10 days and he's probably the lightest kid in the entire league.

I grew up right-handed, but I now identify as a lefty. It's great that Target lets me open the door with my weak hand.

Stake his foot in the ground and throw at him for awhile. Let him know that every time he strikes out, this will be the consequence.

I'm not sure that's true. I'm sure a lot of guys my age had fathers who were so impressed with Mantle they tried to make their kids switch-hit. My old man knew I was right-handed so as soon as I picked up a bat he had me turned around and hitting from the left side. It worked fine until the pitching was good enough that I couldn't hit from either side.

My friend Jerry tried to make his grandson a left-handed thrower. It worked out okay. He can pitch with both hands. But that's a weird thing to do. It takes more fine skills and brain work. Batting is not nearly as complicated.

don't they make all the faster runners hit lefty in Japan. to get the extra step toward 1B out of the batter's box.

I was playing fast pitch up until the age of 26 or so with my buddy from work. I won some games hitting LH homeruns.

I'm not sure which way you are "supposed" to bat. I am right handed. I would think I would have more power batting left handed.

I would say the way you are "supposed" to bat is however you would do it if you had never seen a bat before and picked one up cold. I would say the ideal way to bat is to have your dominant eye out front.

yeah but I can't ascertain that now. I am thinking if you were a cave man and flailing a stick at a beast about to eat you you'd put your dominant hand on the "knob". if you needed two hands you'd put your weaker hand above that.

started at about age 12 trying to bat like Griffey Jr. and M.Grace. We use to take the lineups for the day out of the newspaper and play a game of fast pitch using the lineups of our favorite teams. I'm naturally right handed, but still enjoy taking swings in the batting cage lefty. Tried throwing lefty and could not do it.

Well, I think most switch hitters have more power with their dominant hand on the bottom, but hit for higher average with the dominant hand on top. As a righty it certainly feels more natural for me to bat right-handed. Oddly enough, I'm more comfortable shooting a puck left-handed.

I throw right, but bat left naturally. Made up for the advantage by being extra slow in and out of the box.

I learned golf right handed, but often think I should switch to lefty to unlearn all of the bad habits I have developed swinging righty. Or just sit and drink beer and watch younger people golf.

With me I discovered in my late teens that the opposite was true for me. Growing up throwing & hitting right handed, I one day discovered playing strikeout that I hit for contact/average/line drives from the left side. I had more power from the right side, probably because I'd spent 10-12 years hitting that way. In a blowout game I once had my 11 yr. old team bat from their opposite sides. They almost all hit shots & started taking bp on both sides.

Well, Im talking about a kid that cant even make contact with the right. At the most basic level I think its best to concentrate on one side

But like I said, early is good, just not day 1. But who knows, everybody is different. Ive had kids who essentially master skills after being shown once and dont look back and others who practice a ton and still have issues. "Its not supposed to be easy..."
