Its really a travesty that there isn't a yearly Tour stop in the greater Chicago area. The BMW is not here annually, and Deere Run is not close.

Thanks for that, Jemseks.

I saw the PGA at Medinah and the US Open at Olympia Fields. Cool experiences.

But golf is a really hard spectator sport.

My favorite experience was every Summer my parents would take me to Butler for the Western Open and the crowds weren't that large. I'd follow Greg Norman around the entire round and you could get right in the front. Nobody was there. That was fun.

The first time I saw Tiger was at I think it was at Cog Hill. I'd seen him on the Faces in the Crowd (?) section of SI. He was still an amateur so not a big crowd around him. I stood about 25 feet from the tee box and he hit a drive that sounded like bacon sizzling on a skittle. Never heard anything like it. I knew right then he was playing a different game than I was.

One Western Open I had breakfast at the hotel next to Tom Kite.

You're happy for me.

Did he have his straw hat on?

My Dad used to go to the Western and he helped moved some chairs and ropes so Nick Price could hit his shot. I forget which year, but its when he was at/near the top of the rankings and one of the years he won. Price chipped in and shook my Dad's hand after and joked he should follow him the rest of the tournament as a good luck charm.

Looks like most of the future sites are already set through 2051, with mostly the same courses:

2026: Shinnecock Hills Golf Club - Southampton, N.Y.

2030, 2050: Merion Golf Club - Ardmore, Pa.
2034, 2051: Oakland Hills Country Club (South Course) - Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Years still undetermined:
2031, 2036, 2038, 2040, 2043, 2045, 2046, 2048

Kind of depressing seeing that in my lifetime we'll probably never have another one in Illinois. I wish they would open it up a bit more, bring back Medinah and Olympia Fields. I bet they could make Whistling Straits tough enough as well.

Isn't the Obama course going to get one?

I hope they can get Bethpage Black in that 2038 slot.

The Fighting Joe in Muscle Shoals AL would be interesting. It's over 8000 yards from the tips, including 611 on #1. By comparison, LACC was 7530. Bethpage Black is 7450 but it's par 71.

LACC is a par 70.

Forget the length. Thats not necessary to make it a challenege.

Merion was 6900 yards in 2013 and Rose won with an over par score.

I played Olympia Fields the week after they had the US Senior Open there. It was far and away the hardest course I ever played the way it was setup. If you were in the rough, you basically had to chip out if you could find it. Most of the par 3s were set at 230+ and every par 4 was driver / long iron. I was exhausted and I was about 30 years old.

That was the setup for the old guys tour. I can't imagine playing what these guys are doing now.

Most of the guys bemoaning the set up of the course this past weekend would be lucky to break 120 at Big Run in Lockport, let alone a Tour quality course.

At what handicap are you allowed to comment on a US Open course?

I’ve played Big Run. Good course for the fees. Hilly as I recall.
