I am running the Shamrock Shuffle on Sunday. Haven't ran since October, and put on at least 50 pounds in the last year. If I die of a heart attack, it's been fun.

Been easing into some treadmill work as the elliptical isn't getting the job done and its been going well.
I need to find a 5K locally and get signed up. Maybe I will do that this afternoon.

I survived. The long post I made in response to you asking did not. :(

Did the Kenosha Marathon on May 3 and the Ice Age Trail 50k last weekend. Am signed up for Chicago in October but need to find something else between now and then. Maybe Charlevoix MI marathon on June 21.

any chicago marathon runners on the board? i made it through the summer running and hated it, glad it is starting to cool off now. i much prefer cold-weather running to the heat of the summer. trained hard and ran a bunch of races and the improvement over my first year has been amazing. i am targeting next fall for my first marathon, though it won't be chicago. i'll be looking for something a little smaller i think. running is a serious addiction, wish i had started a long time ago.

I am back to trying to get back into the jogging / running thing. With golf season pretty much over I
need to find something to occupy my time so I will be signing up for a 5k turkey trot and hopefully
some longer distances after that. I don't know why I ever stop because getting back into it is like
starting over again completely, probably worse because everytime I restart I am older.

Congrats on your addiction! I hope it lasts. Mine is about 15 years strong; In that time I've done close to 40 marathons/50ks, 10 of them being Chicago. If you want a smaller fall marathon (local) you might consider St. Charles. Small, friendly, and easy parking. But don't put off registering until the last minute. The price goes up and it does fill.

Have fun!

i saw that st. charles one on the schedule this spring and i think that is a good candidate for the HM for me. i am really eating up the 10k races right now, i just really enjoy those, its a good distance for me at this point. i did my first one back in september in 52:28 and then did one last weekend in 51:09, i am really determined to crack the 50 minute barrier this winter, i have another one scheduled for December 27 in clearwater florida.

t-bone glad you are getting back into it, this is a great time of year to run - if you can get a good routine going over the winter you will be in good shape for those early spring races. i actually use what you are mentioning as motivation on those days i don't feel like going out - i imagine how disappointed i would be in myself if i started slipping and stopped running after all the work i have done the last year - and that always gets me out the door! good luck preparing for the turkey trot!

I'm having a bit of a renaissance in my running right now. My left knee is totally fucked up and just this past year I've gotten plantar fasciitis in my right foot. It forced me to ride my bike more because I just really couldn't run. I got inserts for my shoes which has helped a bit. And I've been using a lot of ice on both my knee and my foot. I've been able to start running again. I've tried to alternate between fifteen mile rides and five mile runs every other day plus a five mile walk everyday. Also, I live on the ninth floor and over the past month I haven't used the elevator going up. One day last week I got out there on my run and I was just coming out of my fucking shoes. I got through the five miles in right around 40 minutes which I absolutely didn't think I could do anymore. I must have gotten the last mile in about 7 and a half minutes or so. We'll see how long it lasts before I break down again.

I hope I can find a way to get back to running and am going through similar things as you. My right knee has had three surgeries and I tweaked my back about 5-6 years ago lifting, which caused some nerve damage in my right leg. Tried to run and every stride I had to make a conscious effort to lift my right leg. Fast forward to 2014 and I was 40 lbs. heavier, with elevated BP/cholesterol and some type of foot injury (bottom/outside of my right foot, feels like a sprain) which made even walking painful. Finally got my back to the gym and got my diet in check several weeks ago and I'm down 15 lbs. I can do elliptical and bike fine, but man, do I miss that runners high and simply putting on my running shoes in the morning for a quick 5 miler. Got a recommendation for a good chiropractor and foot guy, so we we will see.

Gonna get out tonight and try to knock out 3 miles without stopping. I think I can physically do it, just mind over
matter. Not easy wheeling 245 lbs around. I need to drop 30 lbs this fall/winter. I've said it in the past but I
really need to do something. Even if I got down to 225. I haven't seen that number on the scale for 12 years or so.

Was out running this morning and while dodging a car twisted my ankle in a pot hole which of course I did not see. Ankle is swollen the size of an orange right now. Foot specialist appointment this afternoon. Hopefully it is not broken but it is quite painful

I've been listening to this during my recent runs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AxYS74RRDM

It's just about the perfect length for me to cover five miles. It's got some slower moments where I can relax and some quicker ones where I pick it up. My only complaint is I wish "Beautiful Mess" or "Real Friends" was at the end. I was telling my wife that when I get started and I've got "Home" playing, I feel like I'm a character in my own movie. She replied, "Oh God, you're such a fucking Boomer."

Anyway, it's a decent soundtrack. Worth a listen even if you're not using it to run. I think T-Bone will like it for sure.

I'll give this a spin after lunch today. I didn't get my run in yesterday as the girlfriend needed help with some things
at her place. Tonight for sure :?

I just listened to it and I'd agree it was a pretty enjoyable listen. How did you find out about it? Sounds like
kind of an interesting movie when I looked it up on Wikipedia, but never heard of it before.

I read a review and watched the movie on demand the other night. I didn't expect the songs to be as good as they were. Crudup can actually sing a little.

Signed up for a 5K November 22nd, now I have a reason to get my ass in gear. I'd really like to
break 30 minutes but that might be asking a lot with only 3 weeks to get ready for it. Gotta
start somewhere right?

A couple comments on thoughts read here.

Initial improvement when you first start. Don't get too excited and jack up your mileage just because you don't feel winded after two miles. Slow increases in the distance will reduce the likelihood of injuries.

Heavy shoes and orthotics. They give you a false sense of security and comfort and make you think you can ramp up fast. The Nike Free line IMO is the best thing that hit the running market in that it takes away one's exaggerated sense of his/her abilities. Train in light shoes, race in beefy/supported stuff.

20 to 30 mile ramp up. take it as slow as you can.

Been trying to slowly get into it. I did 3 miles in 31:55 last week and felt pretty decent afterwards. It was
on a treadmill and I know I usually move more quickly outside. The treadmill makes sense in the fact that
I can control the speed and just work on stamina. I did the run at a 1.0 incline as well. I hadn't gone that
far in quite some time. Back at it this week as the first race is less than two weeks out. I am not very
fast but like I said it is hard moving almost 250 lbs around.

Everyone has their own opinions but I would caution against overusing the treadmill. Every stride and footstrike is the same which seems for a lot of people I know has led to injury. Running outdoors you have wind, changes in elevation, and turns, all of which changes your motion and gait. Also since the races are outside it can be helpful to prep under similar conditions. BEAR WEATHER!

Just my 2 cents.

Amateur here. I run in basketball sneakers - that's all I've ever known when it comes to athletic footwear mostly. Is this a recipe for disaster? I try to do 4-6 miles each day for six days out of the week.

When I first started running I wore a pair of Adidas like the ones Run DMC wore. It's not going to kill you, but you'll be surprised at how much easier it is with a pair of proper running shoes.

So, here's a question for you guys. I finish up my run by going through a park and then a large field that belongs to my building. I like finishing that way because there are berms back there and it's a good end to the workout. Anyway, a lot of times when I'm coming across the field this broad has a crazy standard poodle running around off leash out there.

The first time I encountered it, it ran into me at full speed and nearly knocked me down. Needless to say I was annoyed. The idiot owner's kid came running to get the dog and I said something like, "Come on, put that thing on a leash" and the kid grabbed the dog.

The next time I saw the dog the kid and what I assumed to be his grandfather had him loose out there. The fucker came charging at me again, stripping his teeth, and growling in his throat. I stopped and this time I yelled at the old man and said I was going to kick the dog in his head next time he came at me like that. I have no doubt if I had kept running the thing would have bitten me. And then one of the owners would get that dog owner smile and say something like, "Oh, he's just playing." And look, I don't hate dogs. I just shouldn't have to deal with one snapping at my heels behind my house. There are plenty of dog parks.

Then, about a week ago, the fucker actually grabbed my jacket with his teeth. I looked at the idiot broad and said, "Come on! I shouldn't have to deal with this." She got this psuedo-sympathetic look and nodded and said, "I know."

Today I was finishing strong and suddenly I hear deep growling and barking and the fucker is right on top of me. I stopped and started going nuts. "PUT THAT MOTHERFUCKER ON A LEASH!!!!! YOU STUPID FUCKERS!!! NEXT TIME I WILL MACE THAT COCKSUCKER RIGHT IN HIS FACE!" The broad and the kid scrambled to collect him.

My question is, what do I really do? I really don't want to mace the dog. It's not his fault he has never been trained. I'd like to mace the broad, but I don't want to get arrested. What would you do?

This. I only use the treadmill when the paths are too dangerous. I am already dreading my run tonight because it will be below freezing, and my body has not adjusted to the colder weather yet. I could feel it on Tuesday night.

The one benefit to the treadmill is being able to watch the Hawks game. When the Hawks are on and I am running outside, I sneak my two mile run in between periods. I knock down two miles in under 15 minutes.

Throw some coin to Spada to have the dog on the next episode of Sports and Torts.

Throw some coin to Spada to have the dog on the next episode of Sports and Torts.

Kidnap him and drop him off upstate and this way he won’t bother you anymore and he won’t get hurt.

DISASTER. Go to a running store (not footlocker -- a real running store) and get fitted in a proper pair of running shoes. Once you settle on a pair you are happy with then order the replacements on line (i.e http://www.runningwarehouse.com/); cheaper, free shipping, no sales tax.
