My wife's company had a fishing derby on Saturday. We didn't stick around for weigh-in, but we took the girls up. My 2 year old had fun holding her princess pole, and damn if it didn't catch a nice little 5 lb bass...almost broke the pole bringing it in.

I caught a 4 lb bluegill and a 3 lb bass on my cheapie Zebco 202 Slingshot.

What was nice was that the kids had fun, and my 2 year old wants to go again.

Oh, and no coyote...

A four pound bluegill!

Not saying bullshit BUT the state record bluegill in IL is 3lbs 8oz and that was back in 87.

I'll say it, it's bullshit.. A 4 lb bluegill is huge, I've caught thousands of bluegills and sunfish and the biggest I've caught was maybe 1lb, 13".

That's okay. They caught a big bluegill. Don't get all uppity, 312. Congrats, Boyd.

I was actually going to bump this thread. We moved about a month ago, and I was out walking a few days ago and ran into a pond in the next subdivision right next to the walking trail. Yesterday, I gave it a whirl at about 8:00 PM and it was great. Nice, healthy bass... but the best part was that they hit top water. I put on a jitterbug and they were killing it. It was fun and probably the first time I've successfully used a top water bait in a couple years. I'll be hitting that pond up again.

I'd start with that big ass river that runs through Elgin.

The river is usually hit and miss, mostly miss. Looking for good spots for bass fishing.

Id just keep hitting residential and industrial park ponds until I found something I like.
I've got a couple that I hit on a regular basis.
Go an hour before nightfall and throw a spinnerbait or chatterbait perpendicular to the shoreline.
Ride it in about six inches under the surface.
That should quickly tell you if decent bass are there.

smashing shorelines before dark is basically the perfect way to see if there are decent fish in a pond. spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and i also like original floaters or a squarebill to give me the 411.

i've waded the fox river for smallies. i start at the spill over dams and work my way for deeper eddies and its usually fish on.

Spent the weekend in a little town called Los Barriles, down between Cabo and LaPaz. Drank excessively and had calm waters for fishing on a little panga. Caught some nice sized yellowfin tuna, dorado/dolphin/mahi, wahoo, pargo(snapper). It's an awesome little place, not really affected by the timeshare craze that happened around Cabo. I'll definitely be heading back a couple times a year hopefully.
