It's surprising to me how little the Score ending local would affect me. For as much of a daily presence that B&B, Spiegel, Parkins, Rozner, and McNeil played in my life in the past, nowadays I listen exclusively to podcasts and the thought of listening to the Score never even enters my mind. Parkins and Spiegel is a great local show but I have no interest in the major sports and especially Chicago sports.

I think I would still miss it. I tune in occasionally. Especially if there is a big sports story. It is not appointment radio like it was 20 years ago. I still usually listen to Rosenbloom on Saturday.

If the Score shut down local shows it would be a glorious, wonderful day.

The Score is going to have record listenership in the traditional dog days of sports talk. It may require them to actually take calls. Bear season just got extended until April.

Audacy just cut a 30 year guy from WFAN. Started as a producer, then was their Yankees beat reporter for the last 22 years. So a Jesse Rogers type.

Sweeny Murti, he was the guy talking when Mike Francesa fell asleep on the air.

He’s apparently not aware that Parkins just signed another contract.

How would the coming bankruptcy impact that contract?

Where's Haugh's beloved transparency & clarity he embraces about Audacy's 28¢ stock price, 2 billion in debt, and uncertain future. Other than Larry Holmes mumbling under his breath hosts are apparently under a gag order pertaining to the topic.

Probably not at all. Score makes money and it's a desirable asset.

That may void his contract.

Where the Score hosts land or don't land when the Score ends local might be limited with most having good looks for radio. Even when they shill on Marquee's "The Reporters" there appears to be a no closeups rule for them not in place for other panelists.

If score goes under parkins is done. Thank god. Hell have to go to the volume with cowherd and do podcasting. We all should want this. To see this clown lose

I still don't understand why the "the Score will go under". Audacy may go under, but the Score is a money making machine that will definitely land on its feet. People will be standing in line at bankruptcy court to try and buy this property.

I think it is more closely people hoping what you describe happens. Then the garbage pickers that buy it usually strip what they can, jettison huge contracts, Troy to streamline and improve. Then sell it again. In other words bye to many asshats.

Maybe I'm not remembering this correctly, but hasn't it been reported that the Score has been losing money because it overpaid for Cubs broadcasting rights?

The Score makes money, even with the Cubs games, at least that was my impression.

The Sinclair/baseball stuff is interesting though.

They are losing their ass on the Cubs rights.

They used to make money, but I'm not sure how much anymore.

Chapter 11 could relieve them of that bad Cubs deal.

Isn't that how the Score got the Bulls -- Sinclair filed for bankruptcy and 890 was able to get out from under the Bulls and Sox?

NBA radio always seemed the least essential of the four.

Yes, but it was Cumulus that field for bankruptcy then.

Shameful unforced error on my part. Yes, Cumulus. They seemed to come out of it fairly stable.

Apparently the Score (Entercom) renewed its deal with the Cubs in 2021.

Rod Zimmerman wasn't there to bid $5M more than his closest competitor for the rights this time.

I'm not 100% certain about the point you were trying to make with your use of "essential," but I'll riff off it anyway. I always found hockey to be completely incomprehensible on the radio. The action is too relentless and inconsequential. Baseball is great on the radio, football is a step down from there, and basketball is about a half step above hockey.

Post subject:  Re: Jim O'Donnell - Score ending local possible

I think hockey on the radio is good once you hone your ear for it. It just seems least likely to follow a Bulls game, or any local NBA game, when television is not available. The scarcity of football and ubiquity of baseball make radio calls a good soundtrack, and hockey on the radio has a unique legacy in Chicago, plus Hawks fans are most likely to be diehards. I just can't conceive of being on the road or away from a TV and being like "god, I gotta know how the Bulls are doing."

I'll tell you how they're doing. They blew a 19 pt lead in 3 minutes. That's how they're doing.
