If they didn't think Grote could do play-by-play, why did they give him the wraparound gig in the first place? Generally, that job has called for limited play-by-play responsibilities (Andy Masur, Judd Sirott, even Rongey got a couple whacks at it).

Fucking awful trade.

The ginger haired penis is insufferable. Might as well have Leery do pre/post from the hallway.

Going from Pat Hughes to Zaidman on the call is going to be....interesting.

Interesting=bad in this scenario.

I think I mentioned this before but I always got the impression Hughes either didn't like / didn't "get" Grote's sense of humor even though Grote played it pretty straight on the air. I hope to God there's not something to that. Zaidman is god awful and they don't need another fucking apologist on air.

Just awful. Wonder what the reasoning is. Zach is brutal for someone who has been doing radio/media for so long.

Looking forward to hearing "catcher" in that obnoxious East Coast way where it sounds way too much like "cat."

I don't understand the angst here, the station has already proven that they're willing and able to toe any Cubs line. They're just bringing their best toady now.

There needs to be a number of Ceausescu-like murders in response to this.

Does Grote really wear a Cubs' World Series ring, or is that just a joke people at the station perpetuate?

This is fucking horrible. Actually, this is beyond fucking horrible. It makes me miss Judd, and I thought that Judd was shit.

But it probably does have to do with the PBP. Grote couldn't really do it, and Zach at least has experience with basketball PBP for DePaul (although he's not particularly good at it given the few snippets I've heard).

I would have rather that Pat retired.

TV and radio announcers usually are given a championship ring of some sort.

This is stupid. And I'm not a Cubs fan.

But Grote was perfect for cubs pre and post.

Zaidman is an ass hole. And I've heard him talk baseball when he's had shows, he doesn't know baseball. Granted, he doesn't know football either but he's worse at baseball.

Maybe Grote proposed the trade because he was sick of the travel.

Idk Mike, for a broadcaster it’s the highest profile gig in town now . I can’t see voluntarily giving that up after 3 years . I’ll have to leave the actual reasons for it to my good friend Beardown to speculate on. He’ll hit the bullseye .

That's nice that they get one, but I think anyone other than a manager or player wearing one is a little silly.

Maybe Grote and his girlfriend are getting serious and looking to start a family. Much less travel on the bears gig.

I'm hoping that this is just a stalling motion that had to be announced before this weekend's Convention, and that Grote will eventually get moved to a prominent role in whatever Mac-related shuffle comes along this spring.

I thought the same but hell, Spiegel might've been a better choice than Zaidman.
