The other half of the story is that John and Ray are out in mornings to make room for yet another whirl for Mancow.

How many stations will he have to fail on before radio people see that his act has grown old?

If suicide were not an option and I were given the choice of listening to Mancow or The Julie and Maggie Show, I think I would choose the latter as it would be the least mind-numbingly stupid of the two.

Remember the last time Mancow was at 890 co-hosting with Pat Cassidy? It was like taking your reliable old comfy sweater and rolling it in some dog shit.

Dying-days-of-the-Loop Mancow was bad enough, now we're gonna get on-a-station-with-Rush-and-li'l-Ben Mancow. Basically Alex Jones without the twang.

Listened to Mancow on my Ike commute down to UIC. I still have the CD box of sharpies. It was fine for its time. But after a year, it needed to be launched.

Haha, Steve Dahl called the Feder story a shitshow on facebook. Sour grapes, but spot the lie.

As for Mancow, good lord! He suffers from Eminem syndrome. Stated another way, let me do nothing but complain about other people, but let me scream bloody murder if someone says anything even remotely negative about me, meanwhile I'll surround myself with the most shameless sycophants.

Bush has good stuff. But instead of throwing a mid-90s cutter on the Democrats' hands by pushing the Social Security issue he won re-election with, Bush threw a hanging curve. Instead of flinging the political heater by pushing for a constitutional amendment to protect marriage, Bush threw a wild pitch. Instead of tossing a couple splitters on the inside corner by nominating true originalists to the Supreme Court, Bush threw a couple change-ups. Bush has mixed up only one group with his pitch selection: his political supporters.

What a time capsule: the worst things in Ben Shapiro's life were Bush failing to ban gay marriage and nominating John Roberts.

Wow, mighty WLS reduced to running canned off the bird crap in afternoons. I can remember when they were live and local all day long except for the live and overnight rerun airings of El Rushbo.

And full unhinged alt-right Mancow. Ugh. I loved him and his show too when he was on Rock 103.5 and I was 15.

It’s official: Commentator and podcaster Ben Shapiro will succeed Chicago radio legend Steve Dahl as afternoon host on WLS 890-AM, the Cumulus Media news/talk station announced Monday.

Confirming a report here Friday, “The Ben Shapiro Show” will air from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting January 7. The first hour will consist of Shapiro’s daily podcast (which now airs at 9 p.m. on WLS), followed by his new two-hour, live syndicated show, which will originate from Los Angeles.

Shapiro, 34, is editor-in-chief of DailyWire.com and a rising star in conservative media.

“When the opportunity originally came up to be the first station in Chicago to carry ‘The Ben Shapiro Show,’ we jumped on it,” Marv Nyren, vice president and market manager of Cumulus Chicago, said in a statement. “With the incredible success we’ve experienced in a short period of time, moving Ben into a prime daypart is the perfect addition to our star-studded lineup.”

Shapiro’s new show will be syndicated by Westwood One, which also distributes his podcast. Cumulus Media owns Westwood One.

Cobbling together a taped show and a live show into one shift seems kind of clumsy to me. Won't he more or less be doing the same show twice? I'm sure 890 doesn't expect people to listen to entire shows all the way through, but still. Gotta wonder how it'll do: Shapiro is a really bright guy, even if his intellect is used to debate lots of crappy ideas, but he has the voice of a nerd from a bad '80s movie who's always like "nyerrrrg my pocket protector" or something. Bad radio!

meant to check out Dahl's last day but completely forgot

Did he have anything to say about his future? I loved the biggest of Dahl fans back in my yout but I'm not looking to pay for nostalgia on his podcast.

I like Shapiro....but agree the structure of the new show will be awkward and likely bad.

Pity that nobody ever taped/uploaded his old "a very ford city christmas" bit. I also remember mancow messageboards back in the day where the faithful rallied against "stern [British cigarettes]" like their hero wasn't trying to do the same exact show back in his heyday (see link up there).

I'm a completely unrelated note I remember this old blaze promotion where you could win an opportunity to come in and play music for an hour and get paid $103.50 for doing so because my uncle won that. I'm sure there's a cassette tape in a box somewhere of him on the air doing his thing, and you could do a lot worse than him. he kept up.with (new) music into either the late 00s/early 10s (like checking out billboard charts and rueing the day when billboard made him.go on the internet to get the charts) and writing down song titles of new "jams" he heard on the radio all over random bags/boxes/papers in his car, so at least one winner of that promotion was pretty "worthy" of winning it IMO.

Suffice to say, these days Mancow appeals to more of a demographic that's "shut off" new music and just sloshes around a giant perpetual whirlpool of the soundtrack of their glory days #GodGunsAndAutomobiles

Whoa, what a find!

I skipped to ~11:00 and just my luck, Pantera was playing "Walk," the only song of theirs I know.

Damn, Anselmo looks even more fucked up here than when I saw him with whatever post-Pantera project he was doing at Ozzfest at the World/Tweeter Center/Hollywood Casino/whatever in summer '02.

Mancow attempting to take on Stern was funny. He did successfully pull off the Chicago vs. NY angle for a couple of years. His annual Christmas show progressed from the Hooters in Orland Park (really) to the UIC Pavilion to the Horizon and I remember in the build to the show linked here he bragged that the next year's show would be at Soldier Field. That didn't quite happen and when he jumped to the station he used to call "Queer 101" a lot of people bailed on him. Me included.

Also a pity no one ever uploaded his 1994 Christmas classic "Slap the bitch like Keith Van Horne". Dahl recently referenced Van Horne confronting Mancow about it in the Hancock on his podcast.

PD puts Mancow in mornings, Ben Shapiro in afternoons, and leaves his job like six weeks later. That's fun.

I'm sure they said they'd give him a bonus before he retires if he will stick around and do these programming changes.
