Roe gets whacked from his WGN gig at 7pm the Friday of a three day weekend. Not unexpected in that his contract was up at the end of the year. He's been replaced by an inoffensive news guy, probably until they see how November goes.

You think that Nexstar should taking the big swing and bring in Senor Columnist to educate the masses from 4-7 weekdays? He wouldn't even have to talk much sports since WGN wants to get rid of both the Blackhawks and White Sox.

i use to listen to him back in the 90s on WLS when he was on with Gary Meier. That was a pretty entertaining show.

Seeing that they have chosen to replace him for now with the inoffensive news guy, I'll be shocked if they replace that guy with Miserable Senor Columnist.

The problem with Roe is he plays whatever role they ask him to—he has been alternately conservative or liberal. If you’ve listened long enough, it is clear he is a phony playing a part.

That said, when he was with Garry, that was a great show. I was listening once when Jesse Jackson was in the news, so Garry was doing his Jesse impersonation.

Jesse called in, was not mad but just funny. Great radio.

Roe and Garry was a great show. Huge mistake by Garry.

Roe was fine. A long, long time ago WGN could have done better, but that's not the case anymore. Running out of Chicago people to put on.

Garry seems to have made a lot of bad decisions in this career.

After Mike Mulligan and Mike Murphy, Roe Conn is one of the worst talk radio show hosts I have ever heard. When he gets a little excited he sounds like Jay Leno with his nuts in a vice.

Nick Digilio always seemed like an asswipe. His tone often reminded me of Jay Marvin, who was a tremendous asswipe.

He disagreed with Roe on how to renegotiate a new contract jointly. Roe reupped, Garry got pissed and quit.

More bad advice from Garry's wife. Garry had made his big money with Steve, Roe couldn't afford to hold out and lose the gig.

Garry was a customer of my dad's at that point, Garry's wife worked nearby and was a regular, and they would meet for a late lunch once or twice a week before Garry's show. My dad said that Garry was a nice guy and that most customers had no idea who he was.

She acted as his agent during contract negotiations when he walked away from the show and yes he’s still married to her. Literally threw away millions during both breakups .

Nick D was a fun listen in the late 90's/early 2000's as the weekend overnight guy. Would listen to him, Art Bell, and Les.

never listened to him but i remember when coming back on visits that ppl really liked him around the time you mentioned. he was the hot thing at the time. i think he talked about movies mostly.

Jay Marvin. Wow, that brings back some memories. I remember he had a segment at the end of his show where he would let callers call in and do whatever they wanted to do. Make fart noises, impressions etc and he would just laugh LOL

yes he would start his show off w/ no call screeners.

and at that time he was a breath of fresh air as the only left leaning guy on radio when it was 99 percent filled with right wing talk radio and rush was in his heydey.

Yeah, Nick is the movie guy. He's in his 50's now and lost that fun college type of show he had in the old days. Oh well. I wonder what he will do now. He was a WGN lifer and I don't think he has side gigs.

funny how all these guys like Meier and Conn use to make fun of WGN and they end up working there.

Roe and Garry was a great show. Gary's show with Elton Jim and Leslie Keiling on WGN was so much better than Roe's WGN show which replaced it (I think?)

Yeah a lot of people forget even back then Garry was old. 7-10 years older than Steve. Married and had a kid way late. No changing for him now.

Chicago was a powerhouse for talk radio. Few good ones left, but it's dwindling. PC rules. Haven't heard my buddy Fred in awhile. He borrowed some of my baseball points here on M & F.

I would also add that WLS management pulled a power play and yanked Garry off the show but left Roe on for several weeks while ongoing negotiations went south. Garry claimed later that they would have been fine if Roe had stuck with him & held out as a team but when he caved Garry lost all negotiating leverage. Many blame his wife but Garry is a very principled and/or stubborn dude and I think he resented both Roe and management to the point that he felt he could never return.
