They're fine with a certain "type" of controversy. It's why Bomani Jones can wear a shirt with a racist caricature of white people on a nationally-televised ESPN show and come away unscathed (despite the obvious--and correct--point of Jones, it is unquestionable that the caricature was derogatory). Why Spain can imply roughly half of the network's viewers are "racist, ableist, xenophobic, misogynistic[,] sexual predator[s]" and not get fired or otherwise reprimanded.
