I really don't get her. She could have practiced law AND done her job in sports, which is what a lot of the people in her situation have done. It's tough to serve two masters but a collar county public defender isn't that demanding. My friend has a government lawyer job and wrote a novel "during his off time"

There's a lot to discuss regarding the unionization of journalists in our current society. Writers of previous generations unionized or created guilds in opposition to those who controlled the means of production, i.e. the printing press. But a printing press is no longer necessary. Anyone is capable of creating their own means of production in the field of journalism and many have.

Which leads us to the second point, and that is that so many so-called journalists are resentful or jealous of those that have been able to do so. Julie apparently longs for the Monopoly Man to control media so that she can unionize in opposition to him.

In fact, if she really had the slightest ability or was capable of writing anything that anyone wanted to read, she could be as successful as Bari Weiss or Freddie deBoer and she wouldn't need to think about trying to unionize against the owners of a dying business model.

It’s a great point, and probably under-explored by people who fetishize unions and therefore commit themselves to fighting yesteryears’ fights.

How do you protect workers? Some stump for UBI in a sort of fatalistic, “we’re fucked anyway” approach. Some try to keep tech out of their industries altogether. What recourse can workers legitimately have when most can be replaced with non-humans?

My idea - normalize white collar unionization. If the managerial class, which is reflexively vilified by the tallest of midgets, finds common cause with the proles…maybe both have a chance. It’d take a rethinking of who does work and what work looks like, but incentivizing behavior is the only thing that actually makes changes.
