That's a fine strategy. When I first got married, we did that with our GM Mastercard. What I found though is that when you spend on a credit card, you tend to buy more than when you use cash. If we go out to eat or shop, we solely use a debit card, which also makes you think twice about how much you spend. For large purchases, particularly online, we use our credit card. Ours is also on autopay.

Unless there is an unusual purchase such as auto repairs, my bill is almost the exact same every month.

That kind of consistency and the discipline it implies is an impressive feat especially for a married guy. When we were paying for two cars, a house, and grad school, I used to have to lay down the law on spending. It was particularly tough when we went from two incomes to one after the kids were born (I suspect you are familiar with that scenario in terms of two to one). We always lived on a tight budget to make sure everything got paid, and we never revolved our credit card or took on student debt. I am very proud of that.

Now my wife tells me about spending money in very abstract ways:

At the dinner table:
She looks at my daughter and goes, "We have a nail appointment on Wednesday."
When I get home from work:
"I was showing the girls at the gym my new running shoes."
