I can see why they did it. However, they were up 6-0 in the 8th, and he needed 6 outs. Could he have told them he would throw at 80-90% and let them hit it...and maybe they hit it right at someone. If they get a hit or baserunner, he obviously comes out. But the game was pretty much decided, so I think they could have just had him take it easy and see what happens.

You have to keep going there.

You want to see great performances, right? The way pitching is managed now has virtually eliminated half the great performances in the game. To a point where we're supposed to believe five innings and 10 strikeouts is great. It sucks.

my favorite statlines from the early-mid 00s were oliver "ol dirty" perez coming in for like 4.2IP 4H 6ER 5BB 9K. it would just amaze me how a guy could literally strike out two guys an inning but still suck so bad. tho he did have one pretty good year with the mets.

Plus they got rid of pitchers hitting, which is a plus.

Jack McDowell's baseball opinion is meaningless. Matt Spiegel is the go to baseball guy in Chicago.

I'm with JORR on this one. The nerds are ruining the game. I will say this - if he was experiencing discomfort and wanted out of the game that's one thing, but if they pulled him because of some predetermined pitch limit regardless of whether he was feeling great, fucking lame.

Publicly Kershaw seemed fine with it. He listed a number of reasons why he should've been pulled.

While I don't really like it, I'm certainly not going to side with a late season fade artist like Black Jack.

It's Kershaw and the Dodgers, so I don't care much either way...
what I will say is if I'm Kershaw....and I'm a "Competitor" like all professional athletes like to claim they are....I'm telling the manager sit the fuck back down and give me the ball to finish the game. He didn't do that. Either 1) He's soft 2) He was not feeling smooth and locked in as described by McDowell

I'm going with #1.

I was at a AAA Durham Bulls game about six or seven years ago where the manager pulled the starter with one out in the bottom of the ninth while in the midst of a no hitter. There are some considerations that are more important than picking up these achievements which are ultimately meaningless. Kershaw is a Hall of Fame pitcher. He doesn't need a perfect game to burnish his resume or feel good about himself. On the other hand, if it's Philip Humber out there, maybe you let him see it through.
