Yeah I need to go back and reread Blood Meridian.

It was my first taste of Cormac’s prose, and it took me a minute to get used to it.

They really need to get that made into a movie or series.

The Road flowed a lot more smoother for me.

Maybe too much cannibalizing, but I do worry it would come to that.

I’ve seen those theories all over the internet, and I don’t think McCarthy has ever said what the apocalypse event was.

I think it was intentionally nebulous to increase the general unease while reading. McCarthy doesn't give much guidance as to what you're supposed to think of his work. If the author has to explain it afterward, he's done a pretty poor job of communicating his idea.

Blood Meridian is not an easy read. I think it is intentionally meant to read like an ancient text or lost book of the bible or something.

You can find an annotated edition (which helps). Someone also placed annotations online, and they are good. Need a paper copy of this novel for marks and notes.


I'm in Camp Volcano. Oceans were still in their usual place, so I am not sure about a meteor. )I heard that a meteor would screw coastlines up. I could be way off.) All's I know is that due to the rape and cannibalism, if it was only my family and no protective community, I'd have us all opt out. Even with a protective community, it might take another few thousand years for democracy to grow again. Everyone says people are animals, but that is in no way true: Without supports, we are almost always worse.

In No Country, the end implies that human life will struggle on through instinct/hope despite the societal devastation. Very similar to the end of The Road. Life will continue to be horrible, but somehow, it continues.

Here's an excellent book that I'd never read before, but is apparently considered one of the best baseball books of all time: A False Spring by Pat Jordan.

This is a memoir written by a guy who was a can't-miss pitching prospect (a "bonus baby" who received $30,000, college tuition money, and a salary in 1959) with a blazing fastball who never makes it out of the old D and C leagues in the minors. Jordan ended up being a writer, and this is a thoughtful, introspective book that discusses the throwing hard vs. pitching issue and coming to grips with the fact that it's not gonna work out (among many other things). It's not dreary and depressing, though, because Jordan traces the arc of his maturity. It's also an interesting look into what the lower-level minors in the Midwest were like in 1959-1962.

The first few chapters are interesting but dense, but the narrative picks up when he gets to the minor leagues. He had some colorful and flat-out weird teammates, and it was fun to read about them and google them. You won't find the carousing of Bull Durham here, and while it's as frank as Ball Four, the writer is a lot smarter than Jim Bouton, and not a jag. It's a book I will be reading again.

It's really good. Not so much a coming of age but an acceptance of self, adulthood, and interpersonal relationships, as well as the consequences of what happens when your interests are too damn narrow.

It's like all of Winchester's stuff. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's well done.

I just finished a book that may be of some interest to other members of this board: We Appreciate Your Enthusiasm: The Oral History of Q-101, by James VanOsdol. It was fun to read some of the stories behind the on-air personalities and events that happened in and around Q-101 (Kurt Cobain dying, Twisted Christmas, Jamboree, Q-101 v. Rock 103.5, Mancow, Electra v. Jack White, etc.) but you either have to work in radio or be a radio super fan to care about all of the behind to scenes deck shuffling that goes into running a radio station.

I feel like Cormac McCarthy is going to hell.

Sounds interesting....except for the Mancow part. Can't stand that guy.

If not, he already seems to have portrayed it in several of his books.
