I remember Mac on the air the day the VT shooting happened. He said this type of stuff is just terrible radio. Not only is it not sports related, but there's only one side to really take - it's awful, I feel terrible for the victims and their families, I hope this never happens again. Not much else to say. I think most tragic current event stories are the same way.

Mac's response was the proper one for a sports talker on situations like this.

It's not that I don't want to hear about the Nazi attack. I do. I watch MSNBC or CNN for as much as I want to hear about it.

I just don't want to hear Spiegel, Parkins, Goff or Bernstein talk about it. I go to them to get away from real world horror. And all they basically say is Nazi's are bad and racism is bad. Thanks guys!!!! That's some deep stuff.

He's wrong. It's never that simple. Do you not talk about 9/11? Newtown?

I think 9/11 is clearly on a different level than any of these other topics.

I don't think there's a right and wrong here. I think it's ridiculous to say someone is wrong for covering sports on a sports show. I also don't blame hosts who feel the need to talk about how they're feeling about a major non sports story.

I don't think it's terrible radio to discuss SOME or these stories like a Newtown or a 9/11.

If people call in to talk about something like that, talk to them about it because they want to talk to you about it, but lengthy soliloquies on Bigger Than Sports can get self-indulgent in a hurry.

Yeah I don't think they should search for stories like JLN to be pissed about but I do want to hear about the major stories.

Yeah. And that Goff can ramble on like no other I've ever heard. I listened to transition on the podcast. That SOB literally dominated 80% of tranny. At one point I think he talked for at least 7 minutes without anybody else getting a word in. He just pukes out words and repeats himself.

He had a story about talking to black guy that said he wouldn't let his daughter date a white girl. Goff's response was "Good, more for my son."

What? Who talks like this. He's insane.

You're also called bigots, racists, and other names if you dare have a different opinion from them on any wide range of topics (obviously, excluding Nazi conversation). This is coming from the same people who supposedly want to understand different viewpoints (if I recall one of their first shows together). Unfortunately, they discuss these types of topics often enough that I heard their ignorance somewhat regularly.

They certainly have the right to preach and apparently have the backing of management to do it. My question is how do they gauge their decision to do it and how much. In this case, how many people do they really think are in their audience that support Nazis? If they somehow wrongly think it is a great amount then do they think they are changing their hearts and minds.

This is a sensationalist case where a person died. My feeling is sports people taking this wall to wall is they want to make themselves feel better and hear themselves talk. I can't see how any score host thinks their audience that supports Nazis or the clan is more than some fraction of one percent at best.

definitely not terrible. but sometimes, they seem to suggest that they have all the answers and that the situations either are not complex or there's a right (morally, intellectually) way to look at them.

plus, they need arguments with evidence. no f'ing rants. we're not kids.
