Sure, they make more money, but Dan is still 6 figures on a 25 hour work week with Terry for all those years. Now it's a 15 hour work week.

I'll bet a lot of doctors and lawyers would trade with Dan.

I've said this is true as well.

They would trade jobs with him and he would trade jobs with them. Still, when the big discussions start and the others bring their schooling and professional knowledge, Dan has to sit back and...LISTEN. TO. SMART. PEOPLE.

I think the guy has appeared in the documentary several times.

I heard that commentary on how Jordan would fare in today's game. He didn't directly answer on Jordan, but argued that athletes today are stronger, quicker, faster than the athletes of Jordan's era.

I believe he said that the 3rd best WR on an NFL team would be a superstar on those teams and used an argument from a texter who said that his favorite running back of all time is Walter Payton, but that he would be the 10th best RB in the league today.

By any of those positions, he seems to be believe that Jordan would be a good player, but nothing more than that in today's NBA. I don't think he has said that as directly, but he keeps hinting at that position.

The truth of the matter is, he's a piss-ant, but his takes are not hot enough to waste one's time listening to is show.

He'll be just fine when he eventually gets laid-off, though.

I am betting that he still has the first dollar he ever made. Odds are that he has several complicated investments that have doubled his money many times over, and that he is significantly diversified such that living comfortably and paying for his childrens' college is no problem.

That, and he probably (like Parkins) still stands to inherit a large sum of money from his parents, even after splitting things with his siblings.

Caught a few minutes of podcast the other day where one of the former producers was interviewed to celebrate Bernstein's , "25 Years at the Score". It was basically a rehash of the tired old Murph stories, but there was one nugget that revealed about why Bernstein's partnerships after Terry all have failed miserably. The producer discussed how Dan would mute a caller when the caller started to make inroads while defending a viewpoint that was different than Dan's. This is a common talk radio trick, it makes the host seem smarter than they really are, but creates a type of echo chamber where everyone has the exact same take and opinion on everything. Talk radio, and most discussions in general, only really work when you have two people with different views actually discussing the issue from different angles. When everyone is forced to share the same opinion you get the exact same conversations with the exact same "experts" day after day creating incredibly boring content.

I don't think that's correct. But it's really no different than saying that George Mikan and Bob Cousy couldn't compete in today's game. Human atheltic achievement didn't peak with Michael Jordan and Charles Barkely and then go into decline, although they like to tell you it did.

We've had this discussion a few times and it's a good one I think. What's definitely different about today's players is that they are influenced by different styles of basketball than the older crowd was exposed to. For example if Karl Malone was born in 2000 he's going to grow up dribbling the ball on the perimeter, chucking threes up, and maybe becoming not even developing into a power forward. Definitely not the power forward Karl Malone was. So if the 2000 Karl Malone is faster or more agile than the real Karl Malone it's going to be because he spent time training his body to run and jump more like a guard. It's not because he's born with superior physical traits than those before him. Is that really the Bernstein argument? If LBJ were born in the 1960s and even hinted at trying to develop a dribble drive game or throw no look passes, someone would have slapped the shit out of him and told him to get his ass in the paint and stay there.

Drinky had a good story on Mac's show when asked to tell one about him and Dan not getting along all the time. Drinky was arguing with Dan on air and saw him reach for the mute button. Matt cut off Dan's mike and asked him "what are you going to do now?"

Abattacola never said anything about the caller making inroads and defending a viewpoint so all that is just your interpretation. Callers are not going to get equal time and allowed to ramble and talk over a host. Nothing wrong with a host shutting up a caller. Most callers suck anyways.

When the station was ascending the callers were an essential part of the shows. I'm sure you remember Jason from Evanston?

Agreed. Do co-hosts even argue these days? It seems as if they prefer to have the same opinion on most topics and avoid debate.

Boers & Bernstein subverted the trope of The Dueling Hosts very well for a while, but nowadays it feels like the Score wants to present a united front (outside of, I dunno, Dustin Rhoads offering some bad half-baked thought) not for the same of knocking over tired talk radio stereotypes but just because they genuinely don't see anything to argue over.

Most shows are boring as hell, just a rehash of the same tired team approved takes. Problem is that no differing opinions are allowed on the station and the hosts seem stunned when a caller that disagrees is allowed on the air. Used to love it back in the day when (I think his name was Nabil?) would call in everyday and call North a "windsock", stole that and still use that today from time to time, it completely baffles people because they have no idea how to respond when they get called out for waffling on an opinion, also makes me smile as a long time score guy.

It definitely seems as if the shows would prefer to be united on topics and only engage in high level fun, not actual debate. I don't think there should made up disagreements, but it would be nice to have spirited debate from time to time, either amongst hosts or with callers.

Have you heard the criticism of the Bulls over the last 5 years? I can only speak for Mac/Parkins but to say they just give the team-approved takes is flat-out wrong. They are always criticizing the Bears and questioning the Cubs.

I think you selectively remember your favorite types of calls from the past while ignoring how awful most calls were/are.

Sorry you missed the early years of the station. If your going to compare the approach the station took before it was purchased to the modern corporate version then as they say down south, "bless your heart".

I did not miss the early years of the station. But talking about the "approach" of the station versus saying that shows just rehash the team-approved takes are two different things. If I felt a show was acting like team-employed reporters and only giving team-approved takes, I wouldn't listen to them. As a Hawks fan, I don't consume any of their website articles and pay little attention to what Eddie Olczyk and Charlie Roumeliotis report.

Interesting, but does not bear (pun somewhat intended) up to scrutiny. Let's look at Bears coverage for example, Hub is a guest on all the shows, arguably the stations top Bears expert. Hub will shut down any caller or host that even begins to question/place blame on Bears ownership, his takes become the takes of everyone else at the station. Grote is a Bears team employee and is the stations Bears reporter, filling the team friendly reporter roll formerly filled by Holmes and Zaidman. The primary source rolls are all filled by guys that are directly connected with the team therefore they are reporting exactly what the team wants them to report, so they are in fact giving you team approved takes.

Dan, ex minor league team employee, making the argument the minors are basically useless.

So is he for the players or owners here?

Walking the fine line.

Well-stated. Great example of some of the edge and real-ism that the station lost many years ago.

My point was about the hosts not their guests. I agree with you about Hub, Grote, and Zaidman. On the baseball side, add in Stone and Kasper. If your point was directed only to the reporters then I understand and agree.
