I know someone probably brought it up when he originally made the claim, but I just remembered he went to fucking Duke in North Carolina.

It would be like someone in Chicago saying they never heard of Mike Ditka.

Somebody email something as "Executive Order from The White House"...

Do you mean the WCW?

No, World Class with the Von Erichs was Dallas. I didn't think their TV spanned that far. I figured by the time promotions were chasing TV deals market-by-market, it was pretty much down to the WWF and NWA. But I guess they did have TV here!

Yeah, I could watch them. I didn't do it that often like WWF stuff but I liked Kerry Von Erich.

World Class was on cable on Saturday evenings around 6:00 p.m. If I remember correctly.
It came from the Sportatorium in Dallas, Texas.
All the Von Erichs, The Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Jack Roberts), Gentleman Chris Adams,
Gino Hernandez, The One Man Gang, Iceman King Parsons and Abdullah the Butcher.
Wow! Those were some great stars back in the day!

Oh he knew of ric flair. For some reason he loves to play like he does not know guys like this. He did the same thing with macho man. One of his many strange quirks

Because it incites dumb (white) callers and texters to his show that he can use to riff on if things get slow.

Grote is doing updates this afternoon and a few of the ones I have heard have been Abbattacola-like.

Just do the update and get the hell off my radio. I'm not tuning in to hear the update guy.

ESPN, bay-bay

Used to get WCCW and AWA back in the late 80's. UWF (Oklahoma based) had a huge syndication deal as well.

Yeah, I know JCP bought the UWF for their syndication deal and that was how they started to overextend themselves and go broke. I guess I thought World Class was strictly local/regional.

Yeah, I don't think they actually hit ESPN until they were on the downswing....I just remember coming home from school and seeing the Von Erich's, etc on weekdays, and AWA was on from the Showboat Hotel & Casino on Sunday nights. That was near the end for the AWA, too.

The ESPN oral history book talks a bit about picking up the wrestling shows for the guaranteed ratings...and cheap cost. Jim Cornette and Bruce Prichard talk a lot about the TV and syndication deals and when that model started to switch on their podcasts. Interesting stuff

I watched it last night. I found the Hogan interview the most interesting as he showed a level of self-awareness that I would have never expected and flat out said Flair was way better than he could ever be.

Agreed. I think he's still in damage control PLEASE LOVE ME AGAIN mode since the tapes with him using the racial slur came out.

Yeah, I watched it last night too. I was shocked by Hogan, quite honestly.

I think Hogan's always known what he was. Cena is the same way. Neither are great wrestlers. But they know how to connect and make money.

Agreed. But knowing it and admitting it are completely different.

Cena is a way better worker than Hogan imo.

The UWF was the first place I saw guys like Sting and Rick Steiner (who were a tag team at the time). IIRC Sting was billed as being from "Every man's nightmare."

Other than a serial womanizer, he's not. Bernstein is an idiot.

Uh...constantly telling people how great he is, how great his possessions are?

It fits.

The same 1980s indulgence in possessions that created Trump, made Flair a reasonable character.

I liked that one Nitro where Hogan wrestled Bret Hart and out of nowhere started doing all the technical wrestling moves.
