Joe has become irritable ever since the Indians series because he knows the esteem in which he is held is largely based on smoke and mirrors. His grasp of metrics, while revolutionary in his Angels days, has been so far outpaced by entry level executives these days that he is reduced to being nothing more than a guy who reads and implements the daily newsletter generated from above. The creative moves he does make fail with regularity.

If you want evidence of his insecurity that things have passed him by look no further than the ridiculous purple hair dye job. Did that seem like the act of a hippie or someone secure in his position. No that was an action taken from the scene of comedy about an aging middle manager.
