Because when Bernstein says this line about brown people it really is offensive. It's like saying that seeing brown people is the equivalent to going to the zoo to see animals.

So I'm gonna be offended on behalf of brown people.

This isn't necessarily true. There are not that many South Asians in Skokie proper, far more moved to the west and northwest suburbs. There is still a significant Jewish population in Skokie, and they are the predominant ethnic group represented in terms of retailers and religious institutions (synagogues, schools, etc.) as is the case with South Asians on Devon and Koreans on Lawrence (at least retailers.) And the epicenter of Orthodox Jews never was Skokie in the last half century, it was and still is West Rogers Park.
