.. I was less than 30 seconds into their show when they began drowning me in numbers ... does everyone's show now talk incessantly of numbers? No wonder people think baseball is boring; these guys reduce everybody and everything to a number.

Baseball has become a math test, not a game. It is not supposed to be fun, it is supposed to be an equation to be solved to determine who wins and loses.

The only reason I can see the numbers being more appealing to anyone is if you wish to sound like you know the whole league when you can't watch all games (talk show host) or a fantasy nut.

The problem is that certain numbers seem to indicate the optimal way to play the game, but the optimal way is not necessarily exciting for fans. I think an analogy would be if someone discovered that in tennis, one should always try for an ace on the second serve instead of easing up to make sure the ball is in play. Even if that were deemed a more successful strategy, it would be extremely boring for the fan to see nothing but aces and double faults.

Exactly. It's a boring game right now.

That may be. But the fact is that the game is boring when so few balls are put in play.

There is a big difference between boring and mind-numbingly awful.

Technically there is an ideal way to have sex. I do not suggest we limit ourselves to that.

It’s become boring since the game has emphasized only walk/strikeout/home run outcomes. A ton of baseball strategy (the best stuff) has become obsolete.

It’s. It really obsolete as much as out of fashion.

You’re a younger guy but some of my fellow Sox fans will remember old Indian Kenny Lofton. Now what the fuck team would not want the guy now that either hits or walks and pretty much most time ends up on third without help?

No one wants that?

As someone who played through college until 2010. Thank god I didn't play with boring shifts, and the idiotic #'s. Players don't care, even todays kids don't care. Give us batting average, RBI, HR, ERA. All you need. Noone talks about their damn WAR

Yeah, no one wants to go to science class to work on spin rates and launch angles, but they are. A player goes into the "lab" where technicians show them the analytics. The graphs and pies and formulas.

Loads of fun. Are we playing a game or splitting the fucking atom? But I guess if they they are cutting you a big check every 2 weeks, you go out there and split the fucking atom.

I love baseball and its nuances. I disagree with the way the game is being played especially with hitters unable or unwilling to go the other way to beat the shift. I also hate bullpen unloading. Every time you bring a new pitcher in you run the risk of him not having it that day.

There is an art to pitching. Kyle Farnsworth could throw the ball 100 MPH, but everything was the same speed/location and he got torched regularly. Always laugh when they talk about "spin rate", much of it has to do with setting up hitters by getting them to look fastball then throwing anything off speed that breaks. Watching guys like Rizzo and Schwarber hit is maddening (pun intended) because they could easily put an extra fifty points on their batting average by going just putting the ball in play to the opposite field. There will likely be someone who will use the old Cardinals template and get a bunch of slappy/speed guys and expose the good hit no field corner infielders.

Logic would suggest going with and not against the wind so if they open one side of the field that's where the batters should go but they're not doing it. Is it because they lack the skills/ability or do the numbers still say it's more beneficial to hit TOWARDS the shift and hopefully over their heads and out of the park?

Ironically this is how football used to be. Third and one at the goal line, both teams stack the line and run it up the gut - every damn time.

The thought process is that the way to beat the shift is to hit over it, not completely change your batting style.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of something. It’s not good baseball.

It seems to be working to some degree though.
