It's sad really. B&B were the best show in Chicago in the 2000s, something we could still rely on to be consistently entertaining as once-great stations like WCKG and WLS died, the rest of the dial turned to Eric & Kathy/Drex levels of sanitized pap and today's world of podcasts hadn't arrived yet. Then Penn State broke Dan and Terry checked out before eventually getting sick and retiring. Now, replaced as face of the station by Parkins for whatever that's even worth anymore, Dan's just likewise running out the clock until he can either retire, or, more likely, Audacy downsizes his ass.

In the late 2000s, stumbling upon Boers & Bernstein was amazing because nothing sounded like that on the Score or anywhere else. It was a one-of-a-kind fun, weird, bad, and gay show. Not only was rest of the Score rebuilt in Senor's image, you can get the same thoughts about how the thing you like is bad and the thing you dislike is good from:

- Deadspin
- Defector
- The Athletic
- The Ringer
- ESPN
- the whole Dan Le Batard cabal, wherever they wound up
- USA Today's kids' table where that annoying hockey lady was
- various podcasts by people who are also nominally in the DSA
- any blue-check on Twitter

and in fact Dan usually just cribs his stuff from them anyway. Everyone's subverting sports media by Examining The Broader Sports Culture for white-collar liberals now. Why listen to a bored 52-year-old do it on AM radio?

As I've always said....the key word is "entertaining". Bernstein consciously decided to shed his sense of humor and the other shows followed. "News" and "Reporting" are not necessarily entertaining. You can get "news" and "reporting" from a variety of places. Entertainment....that's unique and was what made B&B, HFC, MJH, Monsters successful.

Maybe Bernstein's new partner. down the road...Also, looks like the Score producer to host opportunities are going to be slim to none.

https://www.robertfeder.com/2022/04/11/ ... more-33078

Gabe Ramirez, former morning personality at Top 40 WBBM 96.3-FM, has a new dual role with the Audacy Chicago station group. In addition to hosting weekends on B96, Ramirez has joined sports/talk WSCR 670-AM as a regular fill-in host. Starting this week, he’ll be hosting evening shifts. Ramirez, who grew up in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square area and graduated from Lane Tech and the University of Illinois Chicago, joined B96 in 2008 as an intern before moving up to producer and host. Earlier this month Ramirez was replaced on the B96 morning show with a four-person ensemble from Phoenix, featuring Joey Rodriguez, Aneesh Ratan, Jeana Shepard and Karla Hernandez. Also at The Score, Chris Tannehill, associate producer of Danny Parkins and Matt Spiegel’s afternoon show, has been promoted to senior audio producer. “Working my way up from an internship to full-time staff to my new position at the same station I grew up listening to has been a surreal experience,” Tannehill said.

Gave it a shot yesterday, had Hoge/Johns/etc, one of the guys that look and sound the same that "cover" the Bears, on so stayed for a minute, then they were gonna have on a guy that talks oline on, had heard the guy on podcasts, and he was OK, so stayed.

It was odd because Bernstein let the dude talk and did not seem real interested, the guy gave you some pretty solid content, the type of stuff you rarely hear on WSCR these days, and Bernstein just let him talk.

Found out the lil' Danny was detracted because one of the southern college football coaches he hates was doing a presser during the interview. He was almost giddy when he replayed it, giggling like a school girl, as if he derived some sort of odd verification from what he thought was happening. Moved on to something else quickly.

However, the interview where Bernstein said little was sold, maybe he should just go with a Chet like style, let the experts talk and just say
"ahah" every now and again, then again the show is actually better when he does not talk.

Don't know if it's political correctness, Cubs partnership, or data straight jacket. But, Bernstein is having a huge problem producing interesting content. You know your show is dry as dust when Leila perks it up on her visits.

He needs a good producer. He had a silly little segment today about a lost bison which had some legs, but Rick Camp just took the air right out from it any time he opened his mouth.

Camp seems like a nice enough guy but I don’t know that he adds a whole lot when he chimes in.

Dan has zero appeal these days. And Rick Camp has zero personality or charm whatsoever.

As of 2-3 years ago I still listened daily in the car and would regularly check the podcasts and cherry pick what I found enjoyable.

None of that happens now. Parkins went from a breath of fresh air to merely being arrogant, unfunny and overall very deluded in his level of self obsession. And the decision to give Shane regular airtime has absolutely killed what remaining interest I had in the afternoon show. Worse than Shane’s on air presence is the misleading, click bait way he writes the hourly podcast descriptions. It’s incredibly click-baity and frustrating when you click on something hoping to hear something about the Cubs or Bulls and it’s largely the four of them having some uninteresting conversation about Shane’s grilling or Parkins vasectomy. The show has zero value these days.

All other shows have been a waste for a long long time.

I know they don't care and this is likely just the musings of a goof, but it all sounds incredibly formulaic these days, gone are even the opportunity for moments like "Larry Horse", "Neil from Northlake", or "Maybe Mike North Knows", because the spontaneity that would come with segments involving callers, uncomfortable questions, or disagreements between hosts have all been eliminated.

A guy from some website you've never heard of comes on who is purported to be an "expert", but actually just sounds like someone the hosts have handpicked because they agree with everything he is gonna say comes on and you get 5-10 mins of bland content. Rinse, repeat, and recycle that format for every show. Remember listening to a segment a few years back where Mac actually disagreed with "Bears Expert" Mark Grote about a topic, it sounded like Grote was gonna start crying, he had no idea how to have a discussion where someone completely disagreed with him. Mac, who apparently was looking for something similar to the cross talk between the Monsters and Heavy Fuel crew back in the day, quickly gave up and moved along once he realized that he was now working with people that had maybe 5% of the talent of the guys he has worked with in the past, had to be frustrating for Mac, and you could hear it in his voice on days when he wanted to put on a good NFL/Bears segment.

Heard a replay of Uncle Terry's appearance on the drive home last night, and Terry rightly referenced the highly entertaining cross talk segments back in the day as highly entertaining radio. Realize that most people, especially most millennials, are almost terrified of conversations with people that vehemently disagree with them and that likely is why this type of banter is limited to middle aged and older dudes these days, but the injection of at least some of the energy these types of conversations create would go a long way towards improving the current product.

A weepy Bernstein begins transition today by proclaiming that his generation has "voted for death and dead kids...and it looks like we're going to do it again."

By "we", Bernstein of course means Republicans.

Deep thinker.
