I think he's referring to NFL fan behavior in the wake of what happened to fans cheering last Sunday in the Ravens/Chiefs' game when KC QB Matt Cassel was knocked out of that game.

Fans are no different today than they were when they pelted Ducky Medwick with garbage or when they cheered a gladiator getting killed by a lion. Why doesn't li'l danny straighten Terry out? If they're really gladiators they should expect to be treated like them. Concuss those motherfuckers for my entertainment!

This is setting up for a meatball-baiting discussion of social class and decorum at NFL games.

And it's back to "people are the worst." Riveting conversation, B&B. Might be PTFB very soon.

For sure. It seems a couple times a year, Dan just starts railing against hilljacks and white trash. We know they're out there, Dan, not really sure the point of the rant.

Not everybody owns a gun, wears a ball cap, boots, and jeans
Not everybody goes to church or watches every Nascar race
Not everybody knows the words to "Ring Of Fire" or "Amazing Grace"

Right on cue: let the Butkus couldn't hold Ray Lewis' jock talk begin. It's a meatball Monday!

I think we're dealing with 2 different eras of the NFL when mentioning Dick Butkus & Ray Lewis.

Of course we are, but their narrative always includes the canard that somehow Lewis was physically superior to Butkus which clearly wasn't the case.

Listening to the stuff about class warfare that you guys were talking about. If I had known this would be a topic, I would have bumped the show thread "Let Us Now Praise Affluent Consumers"!

I like how Dan's solution to violence at NFL games is to make NFL tickets more expensive. Because they were just giving NFL tickets away before.

bernstein's "liberalism" is the worst kind. When the revolution comes I hope Tom Morello cuts his fucking head off.

I do not wish for Dan's head to be lopped off, but I do wish for him to stop proffering half-baked solutions to systemic social problems, only to bristle when people say he is being lazy, insensitive, or conservative.

There's not a single-game Bears ticket below $100, at least not from the box office. That's not counting Ticketmaster surcharges, parking, or gas. If white trash is descending upon Soldier Field so they can unlock the "wildness" they've amassed through years of economic suffering, they must really save on groceries during the week.

This is vaguely reminiscent of how Blackhawks games are made out to be Klan meetings while Bulls games are gatherings for Chicago's cultural elite (and benevolently tolerated brothers in the 300s), when in reality it's all pretty much the same people who spend too much money on sports or get free tickets from work. The depths of Chicago Sports Ticketholder Sociology really aren't worth plumbing, especially if you're the same people who howl that Sox fans are demographically identical to Cubs fans whenever anyone dares to insinuate otherwise.

I think the concept of "white trash" may be relative. bernstein and IMU both share an "I'm sorry you're poor" ethic and I'm fairly certain there is some disparity between their fast track incomes.

One of the most idiotic ideas that was proffered during that discussion was that there is a current "wildness" that didn't exist in the past. That concept is patently absurd. For example, I'm pretty sure one can attend the races on the busiest days at Arlington Park and be reasonably sure that their kiddies can ride the ponies without witnessing the slightest bit of violent conduct by human beings. This as opposed to riots over judges decisions at Yonkers in the 60s and 70s and violent mobs actually chasing horse and driver who they believed "stiffed" out of the racetrack and through the streets of Lexington, Kentucky in the late 19th century.

Perhaps danny would argue that horse racing isn't a "simulation of war". In that case, I would present the fan riot at the 1896 meeting of the BYU and Utah football squads that I am relatively certain was not fueled by alcohol.

Football may be a simulation of war, but baseball is the real thing!

re: wildness

I'll buy that there's a mad-as-hell feel among people, but I can't say for sure if it's really manifesting itself while in attendance at pro football games. I feel like this whole jack-up-the-prices-to-keep-out-the-riff-raff thing is by and large a solution looking for a problem, except that the solution has already been executed several times over in the last 40 years, and the solution stopped being a solution, at least as far as the NFL goes, when people in Cincinnati, Detroit, Oakland, Tampa, Jacksonville, St. Louis, and San Diego rose up and said "I'm not paying for this shit."

See, I don't really get that feeling at all. It's like the "angry white male" that was just an easy narrative for guys writing op-ed pieces. I think people are cowed more than ever.

Well, a little of both. Obviously no one is jeopardizing anything by lashing out in the workplace because this is the era of Just Be Thankful You Even Have A Job, but that anger has to go somewhere, doesn't it?
