Dan needs to change Bears sources to Ted Phillips.

Quote:
Dan Bernstein@dan_bernstein

#Bears sources also say any contract negotiation with a new coach would involve Phillips, but only after Pace makes the hiring decision. Money guy superseded by football guy, as it should be.

He’s in panic mode after that Rapoport video. Spiegel, Durkin, Ostrowski, Camp have all taken subtle shots at him with subtweets. It’s odd how dug in he is with his Ted Phillips love but he’s been #teamManagement for awhile.

His attachment to this narrative is insane.

Don't believe people who have tried to tell you Ryan Pace is 100% fully empowered to make every football decision. Ted Phillips has climbed his way to continued football relevance in the minds of the McCaskeys. And it's a terrible thing.

That makes zero sense. A hire cannot be made without agreement on the contract terms. What the fuck is he talking about?

The next transition should be good.

It's worthwhile to note that the last time the Bears were looking for a head coach, Dan berated Spiegel and Mannelly with "Ted. Phillips. Isn't. Involved. In. Football. Decisions." repeatedly, as I recall it got to the point where Mannelly was noticeably pissed at Bernstein's condescension. Now, though, Dan says that Ted Phillips is only contacting teams about potential coaching hires and will be negotiating the contract. Dan has yet to explain how such a supervisory role is not "involved in football decisions".

Ted is not making football decisions. He is only deciding the organizations from which a future coach can be chosen and the amount of money can be paid. Ryan get to chose whomever he wants out of those organizations as long as the person he chooses will accept the money.

It's like the scene in The Jerk where Steve Martin describes the prizes from which you can choose if he guesses your weight incorrectly.

Image

Ted Phillips is...The Jerk.

Here Ryan, you can choose anything in this prize cabinet between...anything on the second shelf...anything between the Chicklets and the erasers.

It's all the appearance of decision making without actual decision making...and Bernstein perpetuates the lie for his corporate overlord right on cue.

Which report came first - Rappaport's or Bernstein's? Is this Bernstein coming out with a report after NFL Network or did he beat them to the initial report?

If Ted Phillips is the President of the team, I don't think it's particularly shocking that he would be working with Ryan Pace, I'm not sure I understand why Phillips is needed to determine if another team's assistant coaches are actual candidates, but do understand if he has to sign off on the financial aspect of the deal.

I don't think this is particularly uncommon though. Pace has a boss; his boss has to sign off. I don't think he is getting approval on the actual merit's of the new coach, but Pace would probably have to justify/explain if he wanted to make the next coach the highest paid in the league, etc. Assuming that Pace hires an assistant from another team (and not a Harbaugh or Gruden type), I don't think Philips will be involved at all other than being the rubber stamp.

Dan engaging in a personal vendetta against this guy for giving his vote of confidence to a female university president? Oh my.

He does look like him.

A friend of mine was friends with a guy in college who was a HUGE Lenny Wilkens fan (this was in 89 or 90 or thereabouts). Sometimes when he'd do really well on a test or something they would send him a letter congratulating him on doing such a good job and sign it Lenny Wilkens (he knew it wasn't from Lenny Wilkens).

Let that comment from @SteveKerr resonate: "There's no way I could play in the NBA today." And he means at the peak of his abilities.

And he's right.

It's how I feel while starting to help my daughter look at colleges.

Holy shit his daughter is going to college? I remember when she was barely talked about outside of not being scared of Raymont Harris.
