I'm sure most players feel this way. Like Dempster said, if he didn't feel they could win the WS, why show up. I would want the players on my team thinking they could win the WS. They need confidence in themselves, especially this team. There's a difference between saying "I think" or "I believe" we can win it all and "guaranteeing" that they'll win it all. It's the people that guarantee wins or championships that need to just shut up.

What are they supposed to say? Well, guys I think we got the right team to be at least 500 and maybe get to the playoffs and if we get to the playoffs we can get to the World Series.....

It's a no win question and answer for a player.

You say the cliche answer of "We can't plan to win the WS right now. We've gotta go out and win as many games as we can and try to win the central again. We need to get to the playoffs and we'll take our chances from there."

Zambrano made this same guarantee last year, along with saying he would win the Cy Young award.

Well, it's stupid to say "I think we're going to win the world series", especially if you're a Cubs player.
Also, I was saying how stupid it is that this comment was deemed newsworthy.
And, that didn't work out so well for Big Z, either, did it? Looked a little foolish in May, right?

I think they want just want to be the one(s) to say.."I told you so"..."I said it back in spring training"...yadda yadda

I like the fact that they al least are thinking WS though.

I'm hoping I get to hear Dempster remind us all that he predicted "THIS" would HAPPEN way back on February 13th.

spring training is the time for optimism. if the players can't be that optimistic on the first day of spring training, when can they be? there is nothing wrong with his statement. he didn't say "we are absolutely winning the world series without a doubt, just hand us the trophy". he said it would take a lot of hard work and effort, but he believed they would win the world series. i like the confidence, and hope it rubs off on the rest of the guys.
