Quote:
Before the Cubs agreed to terms with Yu Darvish, Theo Epstein contacted Jake Arrieta to see if the former Chicago ace would be willing to accept a six-year offer in the range of the $126MM given to Darvish, FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman reports. “Darvish was the focus by that point, but with some uncertainty about whether he’d take the deal, Epstein made the call to Arrieta to see where he stood,” Heyman writes, noting that Arrieta’s key role in the Cubs’ recent success left Epstein feeling “like he owed Arrieta that call” to see if a reunion between the two sides could be worked out. Arrieta declined the Cubs’ offer and Darvish ended up accepting, leaving Chicago with a new ace atop its rotation.

Jake clearly wants away from the Cubs.

Jake's a hell of a business man. He already turned down more than that a year and then turned this down. Wow.

I don't blame Jake, I keep hearing Darvish was the premier guy..he's not, Jake has a better resume, he didn't wet the bed in the post season, ge didn't have surgery, he's got about 6 seasons worth of innings less on his body. Jake was the best pitcher in mlb for 18 months..Darvish has never done that or won a CY.

As I said before this all started, Jake is not getting a Scherzer deal. Boras misjudged the market. Jake may get the same or close to what the Cubs offered the 2nd time and I think that would be a surprise.

I think he wants to be in L.A. .. He probably gotta look at S.D. though. The dodgers can't go more than 4-100 with luxury tax.

I think you have to look at it from his end. At least for a few years, he's probably the best pitcher the Cubs ever had. He certainly was better than Cubs heroes Greg Maddux and Kerry Wood in the time they were wearing the Cubs uniforms. He was a primary driving force behind the Cubs resurgence and came at a very cheap cost to acquire and for at least 2 years it's basically been "Thanks for your contributions but we aren't paying you because we think you are going to decline even though we sign older pitchers to big contracts" and then he gets a call saying "Hey Jake, here's a token offer to return to us based on what we are paying a guy who isn't as good as you". You can't help but feel disrespected by the organization. Now, maybe it's the right business move for the Cubs. Time will tell. I just don't think if I was in the same situation I'd want to a new destination. If I make 5% less of the generational wealth I'm getting either way I will deal with it.

He could have gotten far more than whatever offer he accepts if he would have taken a deal a year or 2 ago. He bet on himself and lost. He expected to be a $200M guy but he's a different pitcher now. I wish him well when he isn't playing the Cubs.

Agreed.

Reports said the Cubs offered him 4 at 110 a few years back. Whoops.

If Arrieta is on his medicine he's a much better pitcher than Darvish.

I don’t like 6 years for either Jake or Darvish. If I could have picked between the 2 of them on a 4 year deal, I’d have taken Jake. The Cubs better be hoping Darvish is amazing over the next 2 years and he opts out….I would not be very confident they’ll like that contract in years 4-6.

Contract is fine if you look at it like this:

2018: $27MM
2019: $27MM (Can opt out)
2020: $23MM
2021: $23MM
2022: $13MM
2023: $13MM

6 years, $126MM is way under the previous going rate. Any extra money you're feeling you're having to pay in years 5 and 6 is offset by underpaying him in his first two years. $21 AAV is under market value DURING the Cubs championship window. And 2018 has the additional added value of luring Bryce Harper. The club is now even stronger during the open window, and

The Cubs giving out umbrellas for a game against Cleveland is tremendous.

I think Jake put his Chicago home up for sale immediately after they lost in the NLCS.

I never got the feeling that Jake was totally enamored with the Cubs organization.

I dont think its that. He is going to go to the team that offers him the most coin, and he knew (as did everyone) that the highest offer would not come from the Cubs.

He ought to be enamored with them.
It's because of how he was handled and trained by the cubs that he's not just a reclamation project at this point in his career.

Or out of baseball completely, as he was considering a few weeks before the trade to the Cubs.

So Jake gets no credit for his improvement?
