I would bet he'll see at least $25 Million per year.

I love Rizzo, but I would hope the Cubs have seen other 30+ year old first basemen contracts like those given to Cabrera, Pujols, Votto and Davis and would shake hands and thank Rizzo for his years of service if he is looking for $25M per year over the life of the contract.

GM Rule #27: Don't pay 1B $25M+ a year. Especially when that contract would begin with an Age 32 season.

OK. Lester and Hamels and will be gone. So now you have to replace 2 of your top starters. How much do you think that is going to cost? The Marquee network is going to have to generate major dollars. Just because Heyward and Darvish will only have a year left on their deals means nothing if this TV deal isn't the cash cow everyone hopes it is. And for Theo's sake, given his track record with giant FA deals, it better be.

Ricketts is also not a luxury tax fan.

Ricketts has paid luxury tax this year with no problem. The issue is not the money in the highest tax tier but the dropping of your first draft pick. Theo has done very well with his first round picks... giving up the selection seems undesirable.

Let's say the Cubs pay top flight money for one new starter. Let's call it $30M annually. There is still $70M left.

The Cubs also have Marquez and Alzolay that should both be ready for rotation roles by 2021... 2022 at the latest. The Cubs have still built pitching depth over the last few seasons and you never know if more pitchers like Marquez will be developed from seemingly nowhere. In any case, the Cubs aren't about to spend $100M on pitching.

I love it. Penciling in prospects in A+ ball and others who are busters at AAA into the MLB rotation to replace the likes of Jon Lester. We are back to THOSE cub fan days.

Seeing that the Cubs had to get rid of Smyly to pick up the Hamels option and had to have Zobrist go through a divorice to sign Kimbrel, I wouldn't say Ricketts is a fan of the luxury tax.

I don't think Ricketts will allow Theo to spend 100 million on anyone, pitchers or hitters, after his Darvish/Heyward signings.

Lester/Darvish FA
Q/Hamels/Hendricks Trades

I don't have a lot of faith in replacements in the rotation coming from the minors. He's had 7 years to come up with someone.

You're right. These players could be called up and fail in their first season like Eloy and Cease have.

If Eloy was a Cub right now there would be 15 threads about how he is a bust.

Without a doubt. And other players-as-Cubs threads would look similar to a counting thread for Tim Anderson errors. White Sox fans love to pay attention to everything outside the White Sox.

Except FavreFan. Best Sox fan on the board. Has gone to 20 games this season.

absolutely true. Even the good ones usually have a learning curve. Eloy has flashed some big time ability at the MLB level but I'd hardly call his YTD a big success (except for his game winning home runs against the cubs)

Sox fans were ready to scrap the Tim Anderson experience for Machado.

I'm just hoping that some day a few of these Sox prospects can be a Len MVP candidate

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black...

All of these threads were started by the same person, who is not a Sox fan;

Not to mention YOU brought up Sox players in this thread. smh.

BTW, Eloy leads rookies in HRs. Somebody who pays as much attention to the Sox as you do should know this, IMU.

80 year old baseball fans rejoice. If that were true.

Score another point for the intelligence of Sox fans.

Ever hear of Pete Alonso? Fernando Tatis? Christian Walker? Michael Chavis?

Except that there is. Started, of course, by a Cubs fan. Then he knocked a few balls out of the park, and Cubs fans stopped posting in that thread.

Excuse me. I forgot to put AL.

Apologies, so I will clarify. As of Tuesday, Eloy lead AL rookies in HRs.

There is this thing where the NL and AL have their own MVP, Cy Young, and ROY. A baseball brain such as yourself should know these things.

Care to address all those Sox threads you started or should I continue to take Cubs fans to the woodshed here? Not that gd needs my help in doing so...

Leads in the AL with 1 HR every 16 at bats.

Love White Sox fans totally ignoring modern statistical analysis. Eloy is a below average MLB player. Poor defensively, .293 OBP, WAR of -0.5.

Who the fuck cares about Eloy?
This is about picking up the club option (which I'm certain the cubs will do of they dont offer an extension outright).

Modern? Those metrics are more than a decade old. OBP is almost as old as BA. There are much more modern metrics to indicate that Eloy hasn't been all that great but YOU don't know them.

Without a major injury, of course they pick up his option. There's virtually zero chance, if healthy, he doesn't make a post season roster. Stupid thought.
