You are having lots of trouble here. Theo partly justified the contract by saying that Heyward would be playing CF. He started in CF for 21 games in 2016, 12 games in 2017, and 20 games in 2018. Now, this isn't Heyward's fault because he was never a full time CF before coming to Chicago. But as questions arose about paying $180 million to a right Fielder who is a solid player, but not a perennial All Star, that figure was justified in part by Theo saying Heyward would be playing CF.

That never happened.

This is dumb on a couple different levels.
First, the talk of Heyward being signed to play center field was largely because Fowler was expected to be gone in December. A curious mind might remember that Fowler suddenly signed with the cubs in a one year deal during spring training. So Heyward wasn't going to be the everyday centerfielder any more. He'd stick with his natural position.
Beginning in 2017 Almora was generally patrolling center field. So again, Heyward was able to play his natural position.

Frank, I'd like to think you're just fucking around and you didn't mean this in any kind of serious sense. Because it is completely senseless and without any real thinking. If you want to say Theo sold a bill of goods that he didn't try that he talked about Heyward like he'd be a 290 guy with 20+ a year.

Also he didn't justify shit with the money he spent on him. Heyward had at least 2 other offers for 20 million or so more. Theo did pay less than he was even offered by his current team at the time.

There was this idea perpetuated on the Score and by some around here that fans should not worry about the size of a player’s contract because it is not our money. Then the reality of the competitive balance tax’s repeat offender penalty became apparent forcing the big spending teams to drop below the threshold.

So in a non cap world, Heyward’s contract size would not be that big of an issue. But when you cannot keep spending above the threshold due to increasing penalties, the Cubs have and will lose players they would otherwise have the dollars to keep.

Heyward is a nice guy and well spoken so it is hard to dislike him. He looks like he should be able to hit the ball 500 feet. But he always appears to be guessing at the plate and rarely makes hard contact.

One good thing about the Heyward bad contract negative impact on the Cubs whole organization is it's there for Rick Hahn to see. The current Sox run for excellence doesn't have anything near this bad money disaster. The Cubs are toast, so it doesn't really matter anymore, except for comedy.
