Did he throw out the first pitch, too?

Hearing/seeing Tom Morello and Wilco during the 7th inning the next two days will be pretty cool though. They never, ever should have had some C-list actor that prefers going by the acronym "T.I.N.".

At this rate, Lilly will go 4 innings. Either he doesn't have good stuff today or the umpire's strike zone is the size of a nickel.

he got his shit back together finally. Like Reed Johnson's aggressive baserunning even though he got gunned down, guy is having a good game.

The cubs were still playing yesterday's game until about the 3rd. Finally got settled down and started playing small ball. Got 'em 5 runs so far. Nice turn around for Lilly today.

Yet another very important win coming off of that loss Friday. Ted Lilly is proving to everyone that he is a very solid starter, and that any team would love to have him. Reed Johnson is proving that he is the glue that holds this team together. Chad Gaudin has brought a sense of calm over the bullpen, when it appeared things were starting to sour out there. Derrek Lee did hit into a double play, but it was encouraging to see how hard he was trying NOT to hit into it. If he keeps up that effort, he likely will stop hitting into them soon. The team really has a very professional, winning demeanor.

According to my calculations, and looking at the schedule, it seems clear the Cubs should win at least 22 out of the next 27, and that will make it very difficult for the Brewers or the Cardinals to mount much of a comeback. Things are well in hand, so have a nice afternoon, spend a nice evening with your significant other, have a wonderful Sunday morning, and enjoy another Cubs win tomorrow. And, most importantly,

relax. relax. relax.

Nice game today; Lilly battled, and the offense looked like professional hitters. And does it get better than Tom Morello singing the stretch? I think not. Fuckin' wish I had some of those expensive-ass Lollapalooza tickets.

That was pretty cool. Yes, today was refreshing, but I think we all knew it would happen. Yesterday was almost like playing on a day off. They just mailed it in...

Gaudin and Marmol looked good again today. Marmol is starting to miss bats again, both with his slider and fastball.

The bullpen, except for a certain pitcher <cough> Howry <cough> has pitched pretty well since Wood has gone down. They haven't imploded as some teams might when their closer goes down.

I know Howry pitched a scoreless inning but I still think at this point in the season he is a detriment to the team unless his velocity comes back. When Wood comes back, you have Marmol in the eight and Gaudin, Cotts and Samardzija for the seventh. To me, Lieber is a better fit than Howry.

I am not sure about Lieber's injury status, but I don't think Lou is a big fan of him.

heh lou isn't a fan of pitchers in general. but i agree about howry, don't throw him in there unless there's at least a 5+ run lead.

i don't think he has it anymore. but samardzija is promising. he's green but he'll learn. i like him.

I was just thinking about that today. Did Lieber die or something? I can't remember the last time I've seen him throw.

You don't hear anything in the paper or thru any media regarding Lieber or his injury, which leads me to believe he doesn't figure in the Cubs plans the rest of the year.

Which is too bad because he was pretty effective coming out of the bullpen this year, more so than HR Howry.

Lieber's looked pretty poor all season. He came through a couple times right after he got picked up off the waiver wire, but since then he's been extremely shaky and only good for 1 or 2 innings.

Carlos out after the 5th? I'm hoping he just wanted to limit his workload.

Soriano is a butcher out there in left. That's twice today where he let balls get by him when any other leftfielder in MLB would have made the play, save for Adam Dunn and whoever the Pirates marched out there today. He sucks, too.

Cubs are trying to give this one away. With the Brew Crew losing, they should try to take advantage of this, but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

On the plus side, Len did say that the bullpen catcher took Kerry Wood off the wall on the very first pitch of his simulated game. The bullpen catcher. :?

It sucks Gaudin will get the win here. Assuming of course Marmol doesn't self destruct.

Good to see them pull out a win after all. That's what this team's gotta do, not let giving up a lead get to them. :salut:

Sucks that Z was robbed of a win, but at least the team got the win.

Good afternoon! Another wonderful day of baseball! I can't help but feeling, after reading the last 10 or 12 posts, that the Cubs had lost this game. The negative thinking on this board is hard to comprehend. Lou pulls out Z after 5 innings, and you think Z is hurt, or having cramps again. Gaudin comes in, struggles slightly, and he is terrible. Soriano is a lousy left fielder, the worst in the league, as though the Cubs brought him to Chicago to be a defensive specialist or something. He had yet another fine day at the plate. Writing this series off as a letdown series when the game is tied.

People, this team is destined to go very far this year. Don't put too many eggs in the basket of one game against the Pirates in early August, a game in which thy actually won, contrary to the vibe of this thread.

Alas, all is indeed well, Zambrano is NOT hurt. It was NOT a let-down series. Soriano will NEVER be a very good left fielder. Gaudin has been very good for the Cubs since coming over. Samardzija looked splendid again. Look at the SUNNY side once in a while, and turn those frowns upside down! 22 games over .500! I can sum this topic up in three words:

relax. relax. relax.
