Man, don't have DeRosa bunt in front of Cedeno and Blanco. I can see if it was in front of Soto and the Pocket Rocket or something, but Cedeno and Blanco? Predicable result there.

Marmol has a mental block with the last out of a ballgame.

Edit: nevermind. Man, is that guy awesome.

It should be interesting to see how the Brewers handle this. They've been awesome since the AS break and have kept losing ground. This puts them 6.5 back and drops the Cubs magic number to 23.

The Brewers will handle this by wiping the floor with the Pirates.

The magic number is now 18, to make the playoffs, and 23 to win the division. The Brewers have Dave Bush going tonight. He has actually been very good lately(2-0 2.66 ERA in last 3 starts) and the Pirates have Gorzelanny pitching. He has been awful of late (0-2 8.80 in last 3) and the Brewers have killed Lefties all year. So it looks like the Cubs may have to be content with lowering the magic number by 1 today. But you never know...
Great job by the bullpen today-especially Marmol. He was FILTHY.
Finally, Scott Eyre contributed to the team again...by walking in the winning run....
These two games have been great theatre. What exciting, tough games they have been-with great endings too. Now it looks pretty good for the Cubs to get their 10th straight series win. If they sweep again, it would be their 12th series sweep of the year too. But Myers tomorrow is not going to be easy. As stated earlier, he is on a streak of 16 straight scoreless innings pitched and is 6-3 lifetime against the Cubs. But the boys in blue are on a roll with a 7 game win streak and playing at home, where they are 32 games over .500, so....

Actually Steve, Eyre walked in the tying run and Soriano homered in the winning run. I gotta be honest though, the Cubs got some breaks and took advantage. Good for them.

Cubs took advantage of some horrible umps today. They blew half a dozen calls.

Thats right-that was the tying run. What a big run it was though.

Chris-you are right about the umps. That call at first on Howard was awful. But thats something that has happened the other way at times this year. Over the course of a season, you get some calls and have some that go the other way. you just hope your team takes advantage of the breaks they get. And they did...

Congrats to Jeff on his first MLB win.
Marmol looked awesome.
Now, if they can just get Z to put down that fifth Super-Sized Big Mac deal. Carlos, start drinking water and lose some freakin' weight. He looks bloated.

Its funny how when guys are winning and dominating, we never notice a few extra lbs. Once the Cubs clinch the division, they can give him a few extra days off along with Harden and Dempster. Get them all lined up for the playoffs and World Series. It's going to be fine. Z will be great when we need him to be.

This game today is going to be another good test. I think its a nationally televised game. That should ensure that the guys are highly motivated to play a great game. I just hope Myers does'nt have his best stuff again and that they can break his scoreless streak early.

whewww Lily looked horrible, lucky to get out of that inning without giving up any runs. Hopefully he settles down and the offense gives him a lot of support.

The point isn't that he's gained weight. It's that it might be affecting the way he is throwing the ball. I've heard whispers about possible back problems and how that might have something to do with the lower velocity of his pitches.
I heard some of this from drinky, who happens to be a Cubs fan.
Please remember that Z had issues with dehydration caused by his reluctance to drink water. The Cubs are having an amazing season. I just hope Z can turn things around. Z is not performing that well recently, and this is possibly a reason for his problems.

Extra weight has caused problems with Jenks in the past. You're right about that. Z is struggling on the mound right now.

That's the point Steve. He looks bigger, and he is struggling on the mound. I hope there isn't a correlation, but there's a possibility.

Its possible. But he went winless last year in August. What was the reason for that? I think he just has a period in the season where he has a tired arm. If they are able to give him some extra time off before the playoffs, I think you will see the dominant pitcher we have seen many times before, in Big Z.

Nice to see Lilly pitching well, after putting the first 2 batters on. Good to break the scoreless streak by Myers, but I wish they had squeezed with Lilly up with a guy on third and just 1 out. An extra run, would have been nice there. I know Lilly knocked in a run swinging away in his last start, but I would have liked to have seen him lay it down there.

Bad 3rd inning. A-Ram up with runners on 1st and 3rd and nobody out. He pops out and Edmonds grounds into the DP. Unproductive outs there. Should have gotten at least 1 run.

I honestly can't remember the time I've seen this -or any- team take so many called third strikes. After the first 3-4 innings, you'd think they'd get the message, but nope; they continue to look like fools, knees buckling as another curveball falls right down the heart of the plate.

Stupid wife-beating Myers. I blame Dick Stockton, the Chicago Sports Jinx.

Dick Stockton is 353 years old. He's like Yoda, but slightly younger.

Jay-zus fah-king christ. Bases loaded, 1-2 count, and Soto takes one right down the fucking middle. Unbelievable. What, do they have some competition in the clubhouse where the guy who takes the most third strikes wins something? What the fuck is it today with taking called third strikes?

And as an aside, this Ump is awful. He has the lowest and widest strike zone I've seen in some time. One more thing: the Phillies are getting away with far too many mound meetings; people talk all goddamn day and night about this or that slowing the game down, yet the Phillies have had like 5 mound meetings in one inning two days in a row. Move it along, cocksuckers.

Go get em tomorrow.

Well, that ended appropriately: caught looking one last time.

Soriano looked drunk in that last at bat; Lidge threw the same pitch 3 times, and he swung and missed at all 3. Bad day for Sori.
