And now a topic of conversation in the Sox section in this new thread, started by a Cubs fan of course: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=105579

C'mon dolphin. I know he's a Cub and all but he's probably one of the best infielder defenders you've ever seen.

and yet, he cannot start at shortstop for his own team

Classic dolphin.

You've won me over. Baez sucks. Russell sucks and boy oh boy does Zobrist suck. Add him to the Theo list of FA busts.

I'd hazard a guess he doesn't start at SS because Russell is an elite defender.

Reading yes, as I only view the board through active topics. But out of 7 threads, I only posted in 1. I'll venture to guess you are more active in Cub fans than 1 for 7.

1 for 7, that's about Heywards average. :(

Saw that as well as a couple more amazing plays on defense. The guy just brings an energy to whatever team he plays for. He's fun to watch and gets everyone else energized. No way should they trade him. Can play every position on the field practically, runs exceptionally well and is a good hitter with pop. Spring training is winding up and as far as him being traded in the next week and a half...in the words of the Kap man....."No Shot".

Of course, he's a Cub! I also just learned in the thread above that Heyward is the best right fielder in all of baseball.

You may not want to admit it, but those two are great defensive ball players.

There's no disputing that.
Saying they are great defensive ballplayers is a LOT different than saying one is the best infielder we have ever seen, and one is the best right fielder in the game.

I wont deny the first part. The second part is laughable.

Where does Heyward check in on the Frank Costanza top 25 defensive RFs?

And in general, what do you think of Javy Baez as a defender?

Hell of a shoutout to Jim Hendry for Baez & Contreras.

The only talent developed by Theo in the starting lineup was Bryant.

jimmy, jimmy, jimmy.

Do Baez and Contreras develop under a Hendry regime? Hell, are they even part of the organization or are they traded for a "win now" middling player before they could make an impact at the MLB level?

And you're really not going to give credit to the Theo & Co. for developing Rizzo and Hendricks? Also, is it a coincidence that Arrieta and Strop both turned things around once under Cub tutelage?

Plus, what about Happ? You started this thread saying he could easily fill the void left by Baez if he were to be dealt. Doesn't that mean the Cub did a pretty good job developing him in your eyes?

Hey,Theo put a WS winner together and I love him for that BUT not too much home grown talent. Yes,the Cubs have watched other teams talent blossom under their tutelage but still the fact remains not much home grown talent from the greatest leader in the world.

Yeah, Bryant, Schwarber and Almora certainly did not contribute to the World Series. Eloy and Happ aren't two of the top prospects in baseball.

They did of course but one of those guys was just a defensive replacement in 2016. I think he will be a lot better this season.

 What I was trying to get across is the Cubs don't actually look like the KC Royals. They actually look like a Hendry-type team with parts from other organizations. Difference of course,is these "parts" came together and actually won something.

The Cubs look like Theo and Jed are Earl Weaver's kids.

Compare the Cubs to the 1971 Orioles
- Emphasis on the home run? Check. Baltimore 7 guys with 10+ HR. Cubs had 10 guys, albeit in an era where HR are a little easier.
- Emphasis on defense? Check. Baltimore had two legendary defenders in Belanger and Brooks Robinson, and only one butcher in Frank Robinson. Cubs have Russell/Baez/Heyward, Rizzo holds his own at 1B. Almora was on the playoff roster. Meanwhile, Zobrist has aged at 2B, and Schwarber will probably be as bad as Robinson.
- Four solid starters with ERA+ > 100? Check. Baltimore had Palmer, Cuellar, Dobson, McNally, all of whom won 20 games in a combined 142 starts.
- Position flexibility. Weaver was a staunch proponent of the third catcher being more important than an extra reliever, and was big on platoons. The Cubs had David Ross, and Bryant played 6 positions last year.

In later years, Weaver caused the DH rules to have to be changed, because in the middle of a September pennant race he started putting other starting pitchers at DH so he could decide which of his bench guys should play DH that day based on the situation when the position was due up.
