Backup catchers are the exact type of catchers that are usually better defensively. They just don't hit.

Let's all be honest with ourselves...Montero's bat will turn off at any moment and we should all be surprised it hasn't yet.

Arrieta is a problem right now. It would be nice if the Cubs could win some ballgames so maybe they could shut him down for a month and try to get him right for the stretch.

True. But Montero wasn't signed as a back-up catcher. He got moved there because as you outlined Contreras is better defensively.

Montero really wants to be traded.

Arrieta is a disaster. If it were at all possible (which I'm sure it is not), I still wouldn't mind him being brought back as a #4/#5 starter.

My point is that he isn't a good fit on the team. But unfortunately, the contract dictates he remains.

Contract doesn't mean anything. It's in its final year and he can still hit and catch. Cubs could find a taker and eat some/all of the salary. Bring up the Carrot or get a backup C in return for the trade.

Assuming Arrieta remains inconsistent for the balance of the season, I am curious to see how his free agent contract turns out.

You are severely overestimating a trade market for Miguel Montero. Remember how Arizona was begging for a taker years ago? Montero has only gotten worse. If you can think of a playoff team that has such a need at catcher that Miguel Montero would be an upgrade, please let me know who that is.

We were told in 2015 prior to Contreras that Miggy and his awesome pitch framing overcame any problems he may have.

http://deadspin.com/miguel-montero-thin ... 1796482347

Quote:
Cubs catcher Miguel Montero has yet to throw out a base stealer this season, as runners are a perfect 31-for-31 with him behind the plate. Montero caught six innings against the Nationals last night, and they ran wild on him, stealing seven bases in just four innings. Four of those steals belonged to Trea Turner, who swiped all of them in the first three innings. After the game, Montero was upset, but not with himself.

From ESPN:

“That’s the reason they were running left and right today, because they [Arrieta] were slow to the plate,” Montero said after the Cubs’ 6-1 loss. “Simple as that. It’s a shame it’s my fault because I didn’t throw anyone out.

“It really sucked, because the stolen bases go on me. But when you really look at it, the pitcher doesn’t give me any time, so yeah, ‘Miggy can’t throw anyone out,’ but my pitchers don’t hold anyone on.”
Montero’s beef isn’t totally invalid. Jake Arrieta was on the mound last night, and like teammate Jon Lester, he takes his time delivering the ball to the plate. He’s tied for the league lead in stolen bases allowed with 15 this season, and he ranked fifth in the league with 23 steals allowed last season.

But! Montero isn’t totally free of blame, either. Statcast can now measure the time between a pitch reaching the catcher’s glove and the ball reaching the base a runner is attempting to steal. This measurement is a catcher’s pop time, and as ESPN points out, Montero’s average pop time is 2.11 seconds, which is the second-worst time among active catchers.

When Montero is behind the plate and either Lester or Arrieta are on the mound, there’s essentially nothing the Cubs can do to prevent runners from taking a base. Their opponents know this, and aren’t afraid to take advantage—the way Turner was swiping bags at will last night felt almost cruel.

These are the sort of niggling deficiencies that get overlooked when a team is running away with the National League, as the Cubs did last season. They’re struggling this year, though, and that means that all the little problems nobody cared too much about while the team was winning are suddenly big problems.

His pitch framing is still good. It no longer makes up for his noodle arm and inability to block pitches in the dirt.

That comments by Rizzo shouldn't have been made public either. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Maybe somebody should ask them what constitutes a playoff series!

Rizzo himself is pointing fingers. All of this stuff should be kept in the clubhouse.

How many variations on the same banal point do you intend on making?

During his exclusive weekly interview with Kap ( the flagship loses again) he said ordinarily it would be but since this already out in the open and everyone knows what Montero said it's beyond that point .

Considering that I was replying to IMU, my guess I'll need to make it 6 or 7 times.

Any team that trades for him should be immediately contracted.

Getting rid of that clubhouse cancer Montero pays immediate dividends. Only down 1 run after the first instead of 3.

Jesus. Lackey finally gets a little downward movement on his pitches, and KB muffs one.
