All teams do this, but I don't care about all teams...

It drives me nuts when a player doesn't sprint to home plate when scoring. Martin did it today, but they all do it. The Cubs hitters frequently try to take second base when someone scores (as Rizzo did today). One of these times, they are going to be short of scoring when the runner going from first to second gets tagged.

JUST SPRINT! It's the equivalent of a football player slowing up before he scores.

This bother anyone else?

It happened a few weeks back, but the guy was out at third. Willy didn’t sprint home.

I missed that, but not surprising. I'll never understand it.

This is a play they have been doing wrong since forever:

2 outs, men on first and third.

ground ball to an infielder who tosses to 2nd for the force.

here is what's wrong:

runner on 1st slides into 2nd: WRONG!

Runner on 1st should sprint to 2nd and step on the bag,if base is overrun
after being touched by runner and he is tagged out, the run going to home counts.

The forceout no longer applies and that run on 3rd counts.

Jimmy is right and Rizzo did it correctly before.

If you're just trying to beat the force to score the run, you sprint thru second.

If he tosses it to second and steps on the bag for the force out, it doesn't matter whether the runner on first slid into the bag or not. The throw beat the runner. And if he is safe sliding or not, the runner from third would have already scored likely anyway.

Am I the only one confused by his approach?

Ok. You explained it better than he did.

So in this sequence you score the run?

-Player touches home
-baserunner beats throw to second (no force) and is tagged out off of second
-Batter reaches first base

So only a force out will keep the run off the board regardless of timing.

Yea, the run has to score before the out at second is made. So if it's a winning run, all you have to do is not get forced. You run thru (fastest way), get tagged out, the runner already scores.

Thanks,RPB!!

To give you an idea how long this has bothered me,I once called into the Jimmy Piersall show and asked him about that play. He said "I don't know what the Hell you are talking about" and hung up on me.

Bobby Valentine described that play a few years ago on a Sunday Night broadcast, and it is good advice.

As for the original post, I agree that not only should the lead runner be running as fast as possible, but Rizzo (and I've seen Heyward do this at least twice) should not be so cavalier about taking the extra base when the critical run has not scored yet.

on a normal force play at second, the only way that works is if Billy Hamilton is on first...

Rizzo was trying to draw the throw, I assume...

Yes, but Martin was scoring easily as there were 2 out and it was a pop up to the outfield. No way in hell does he not score on that play. In fact, the only way he does not score is if they back pick Rizzo and the tag is applied before Martin crosses.

Correct. Rizzo should have stayed at first. Martin was easily scoring, but either way he shouldn't have been jogging in and these guys shouldn't be rounding halfway to second. It's dumb and has no upside.

It works if the ball is in the hole or it's a close play at Second (this should go without saying. it weird you would even point that out).

Of course it doesnt work on a tailor made force.
