Good for Coomer. Have really enjoyed his post season broadcasts. His regular season approach is a little breezier which I found irritating at first. I get the approach a little more now. For postseason broadcasts alone (assuming Cubs make it) this is a good extension.

I like it. Very likeable person and a solid color guy. Wish he would never do play by play but oh well.

Yeah, forgot about that PBP issue. The fifth is time for all to take a break. Maybe they agreed to have Grote to PBP during the 5th and all will be great.

I suspect that's as long as Pat is going to go for until he retires. The team is likely to need some sort of rebuild/retool once they can't afford to pay all of the core after 2020/2021, so why would Pat want to stick around and broadcast a 3rd place team's games?

Welp. The first 20 or so years provided all of 5 post season runs before 2016. He may retire, but I don't think it will be because Cubs suck. They have sucked more than they have been good.

I probably listen to upwards of 120 Cubs games on the radio and am happy to hear this about Coomer.

Hughes and Coomer do a great job night in and night out. They are honest, self effacing, and entertaining.

Just a fun easy listen.

Somebody's gotta replace Ed Farmer eventually.

That's not exactly a high bar. I'd be better than Moreland.

He's decent at best. I go back to Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau so the bar for me is pretty high.

I don’t mind coomer. Better than Moreland and Santo, although a character, wore on me game after game in the last few years. Nostalgia aside that is. But the coomer play by play is brutal.

I would rather have a guy like Sutcliffe, but Coomer was an upgrade over Moreland. But you are spot on about the play by play

Coomer's color analysis is hit or miss. There are times he does a great job with diving into the details of a moment, be a play, a hitter's or pitcher's approach, etc. But if you listen to him long enough, you notice that 75% of the time he is literally just repeating what Hughes said but with different words.

Hughes: "He really took that ball for a ride, but just an amazing play by the right fielder."

Coomer: "Yeah Pat. I mean, he put the bat on it and the right fielder tracked it and then made a pretty spectacular play to catch it."

Coomer is best in the areas of pitcher vs. batter/ vice versa approach. Pat seems to have picked up on this and a lot of the time is asking for Coomer to say what the next pitch should be or what the hitter wants to accomplish in the situation. that's the good shit. especially when it turns out to be right and you get the patented "Right you are, Ron." from Pat.

Exactly. Coomer is great when he does the side gig to Hughes - he provides great insider insight on the next pitch or the batter approach etc... When it comes to talking baseball he's good.

Coomer is not good when he has to do PBP.

PBP can be tough when you know you're not supposed to "just say whats happening" but add more to it. not everyone can handle that

Bringing back Ron Santo would have been an improvement over Coomer.
