Thank him again but let him walk. Giving him a $100M deal would be TERRIBLE.

I care less about how much they pay him than how long the deal is. Anything is palatable if its a shorter period when it comes to big money baseball. It hurts much worse when its JHey for 12 years making $20M and sitting on your bench.

Doesn't seem to be getting the Six Year deals Boars was requiring.

Disagree. 4 year deal is fine. I am hearing 110 for 4. I don't necessarily like it but it is not terrible.

I can live with a 4 year deal, even for 110. Hell, Edwin Jackson got 4/52.

The 2022 Cubs are going to suck ass. Almost everybody hits free agency by the end of 2021, and Theo is probably going to leave at that point as it'll be 10 years and he's on record saying that 10 in any job is enough. Letting Jake play out the string in 2021 while everybody else gets fire-saled around him by Hoyer would be ok with me.

If Jake takes 4 years / $110MM I sign him today. But I think Jake is still trying to get more years.

4/110 would be a steal. I love Nas but this is a bad, bad thought.

No doubt it would be way more than he's actually worth. But the Cubs need pitching -- specifically, postseason grade pitching -- and he fits the bill.

If only they were able to develop their own pitching then they wouldn’t have to continue to overpay for free agents.

True. Would be nice if they could develop pitchers and position players, but if you can't do it you have to figure out another way to make it happen.

I think you guys will be able to follow this. I think it would be a great for the Cubs to give Jake a large and long contract.

The Cubs need pitching for 2018, and they have money to spend for pitching. So the money has to go somewhere.

Jake at 4x110 doesn't cripple the payroll in the near term or the long term. Darvish is probably a better pitcher for 2018 and 2019 but he probably commands more years.

I guess they could trade for a Gerrit Cole, but then you've got to part with players and pay to extend him.

There just aren't that many great options out there for the Cubs, especially if they are committed to keeping all of their relevant position players.

We were told great pitchers would flock to the new Cubs and park at a discount.

4@$100-110m would be good for both. If Jake performs decently, he'd be up for one more contract at age 35, or maybe move on to one year deals around $10-15mil/yr. I'd take him over Darvish.

Jake didn't look like he had much left. I'm not giving him nearly $28M a year. Despite a couple month stretch I don't see him as a #1 going forward.

For the last three months of 2017, though, Jake posted a 2.26 ERA and 1.054 WHIP in 14 starts.

That was a three month stretch!

Jake seemed to figure his way out of those bad mechanics he was falling back into...that's the only reason I think he's worth it. Like MANY, when he was in the throws of the terrible command stretch, I was right there saying they should never resign him. I think he's going to stay solid...I don't think he'll ever have a stretch like he did when he was unhittable for a year and a half.

If in fact both the Cubs and Cards both are offering 4/110 what is Jake waiting for?? Will he jump to STL for 4/120??

He is still a guy in the playoffs that is formidable and Darvish does have a ton more pitches on his arm than Jake. Maybe they sweeten the pot with a 5th year vesting option??

If they do resign him, hopefully Hickey can get him back to being a #1 again...

I wouldn't say that. Good enough to win with but he walked about 20 batters. Control was a big issue.

We've gotten the best out of Jake, I wouldn't sign him for 4-110$.. I'd roll the dice on somebody else..I'd take Cobb or Lynn for 4 years for less dough.. The 5 innin outings and 112 pitches was a huge red flag. No Thanx Jake
