This guy has come a long way since he first got here. I know Ron Darling does great work but not the total package. Jim is not only knowledgeable but as witty as hell.
Unlike the other side of town where two adult men share "rated G"-type anecdotes,Deshaies realizes he's talking to mostly adults. A good example of his offbeat humor was on display in Miami. During a shot of the Miami full moon ,Jim suddenly yells:"...And Art Carney!"

It was reference for the over 50 crowd but it was still funny. As for game analysis,he usually is right on top of things. He is outshining Len Kasper, who at times seems too relaxed and disinterested.

I haven't heard enough of the other guys to judge him in that context but JD is pretty good.

Yeah,I have not heard enough of every teams guy but I heard most when I had the MLB package. Maybe didn't hear enough of a large sample size, but nobody better than Jim at least.

He is really good. Took awhile to warm up to him but he’s as solid as they come

He's okay. Good at in-game analysis, but not funny at all.

I've come around on JD, but it took a while. Same as it was with Bob Brenly. My preference is always local players or former Cubs, but Kerry Wood sat in a few times and had the personality of a dishrag, and Doug Glanville probably has better things to do.

JD is the only thing keeping Len from being totally unbearable.

Yeah, Len has been insufferable since the Theoandjed regime took over.

I absolutely agree. He’s got a dry sense of humor and is sarcastic. Most importantly, he knows the game.

I like Jim as a color guy, but still prefer Steve Stone . How can people from Chicago not prefer him as a color guy? He may announce for the wrong team these days, but he's outstanding.

Right now it has to be a toss up between:

Cliff Floyd - Mets

Tony Gwinn Jr - Padres

& Harold Reynolds

Pretty sure you don't like any guys of color.

What's Tony Romo doing? He could correctly predict the next pitch every time.

Steve Stone is great by JD does essentially the same work without the underlying smarm - which for the most part doesn't really bother me a ton, but why have some when you can have none?

I get it, they are men "of color", and I have heard Harold Reynolds plenty and he does a very good job. I thought ESPN was stupid when they fired him. But have you ever actually heard either Floyd or Gwynn Jr.? I have not, so I couldn't offer an opinion about either.

Over the years, the Cubs have largely had entertaining broadcast duos in for both tv and radio. It took a while for me to warm to both Bob and Jim. Pat Hughes is terrific.

The criticisms here are Len are fair.

I've actually kind of soured on Pat the last few years. I think I accepted his homespun act as necessary when Santo was around, but now I often find him irritating. Competent, but irritating. I'm sure the over-70 crowd loves him.

Look at Jaw Breaker Bernstein up here. Are you gonna tell me you prefer Ed Farmer, too?

I love him. Plus I can tell by his inflection whether he considers if a ball is fair/foul or a home run/long out. He tries to make the foul/out call exciting, but he does it slightly different than the actual fair/home run call.

I just don't get why he feels the need to pronounce some names incorrectly, like Contreras. It's Contreras Not Cone-treras.

People want to do the right thing and say names right, but then they don't bother seeing it all the way through. Like when people on NPR say the word "Latino" as if they're Rosie Perez but then snap right back to NPR voice.

It sounds stupid. He did it with someone on the White Sox too Moncada. He pronounces it Moan-cada. Remminds me of a Teinowitz joke. He got a sweater for Christmas. He was hoping for a moaner. That joke never made sense to me since Tiny is Jewish, so why would he be getting a Christmas present?
