No sports talk on MVP or THE SCORE right now. But Harry T and Mark Carmen have a sports show on 720 starting now. If anybody cares. I want to hear Harry act like a little girl over this.

If the Cubs win another World Series in one of 18/19/20, it will be a good signing. Not just because they won, but if Darvish does have an opt-out, then some other team will pay for his shittier years.

I think Jake goes to the Dodgers if he's willing to take a back-end loaded deal for higher AAV, and Milwaukee otherwise. I don't think AL teams really want him. A team like the Twins will pick up somebody like Alex Cobb.

I'm intrigued by whether they'll deal Montgomery to an AL team with a strong farm system in return for a high end starting pitching prospect. He'd be a cheap #4 on many AL teams.

Absolutely a great signing if they win it again. Opt out is pretty early in the deal from what I've read.

I don't think Montgomery would bring a high end pitching prospect.

The N.L. Central will get him at least 3 more wins per year.

What was his shoulder injury or whatever after the World Series?

17-17 with 3.74 era since TJ surgery..meh

I'm not a big fan of the guy, I would have preferred Lynn or Cobb for 40% less than him or Jake.

I think the Cubs preferred guy going into the offseason was Cobb, but Cobb seems to want way more than teams estimate his value. So they switched their focus on to Yu and Jake. And when the market stalled and you could get Yu for 21 a year then they went after it probably taking on a year or two more than they really wanted because the value was so good.

I have been on the record here as saying I wanted Jake back over Yu, but I am willing to trust Theo and Co on their judgment. Clearly they think Jake is on the decline and there is a better chance of getting value out of Yu. So I am good. Just glad they addressed the pitching.

Yu/Chatwood is better than Jake/ Lackey IMO

The story I heard was they thought he was tipping his pitches. Bosio will help figure that out...oh, wait...

That's my understanding as well (the tipping of pitches was the problem). Something about holding his glove a certain way maybe ... I forget and can't be arsed to research it.

He has an opt out after year 2. That’s interesting timing.

Both are on the decline imo, I'd take Jake with 1500 less innings on his arm over Darvish.

Oh I think he could absolutely use that opt out. 2 yrs in the midwest may be enough for him. He'll want to go to either LA team and there is a good chance both would have no problem paying him more than the 4 remaining years with the Cubs provided he doesn't fall off a cliff.

The opt out after 2 years means nothing.

1. If he sucks he's not opting out. Obviously

2. If he's good he's also not opting out. Because then he's 33 and nobody is giving him more money per year at that point. And he'll have 4 years left with the Cubs. Because teams were worried about him at 31. As it took this long to sign him and he didn't get what he thought he would get. So he's not gonna be more desirous for teams at that age. Even if he's good.

So, no, he's here for all 6 years. That's a given.

I dont think it is a given at all. If he is really good in those 2 years and the market changes he could easily sign somewhere else for more money per year. We have no idea what the market will be in 2 years.

I don't hate this signing at all.
Even if he sticks around for all 6 years, $20M for a starting pitcher will be hardly be unusual by then.
I believe the tipping of the pitches had something to do with glove level on his breaking balls. If that was indeed the case, seems easily fixable.

20 M per year is nothing now in comparison to giving edwin fucking jackson 15 M per year.

No.

Like I said, he'll have 4 years left with the Cubs at that point. Guaranteed 21 million per year. To the age of 37. Nobody is gonna do better for him at that point.

In fact, Theo would be thrilled if he opted out after 2 years even if he won 2 straight Cy Youngs. Trust me. Because 35 and 36 year old pitchers drop quickly. Then they'll just sign another guy in his late 20s or early 30s.
