Quite obviously when they offered him that dreadful sum they thought he was better and they were still operating under the idiot notion of trying to win every year by signing and trading for this and that, hoping it all worked out somehow.

He's untradable, so since that albatross is there, might as well look at the bright side, or whatever passes for that in this case.

Padres are paying half his salary. The entire bullpen, short stop, and centerfield are much bigger issues with the Sox than James Shields is.
