Given that the Dodgers were down to playing Trace Thompson in September and are probably going to have to use Chris Taylor more in the infield, that's not the worst move for either side as long as he's a 4th/5th OF who mostly plays in some getaway day games after night games and gets reps as a defensive replacement here and there.

But he isn't a replacement level player on defense anymore either. He's shot. End of story.

Then he'll be released at the end of Spring Training, or he'll accept a deal to go to AAA for three weeks and play and prove he can play defense and hit more than his weight. And after that, he'll be released.

The Cubs had one of those contracts a few years ago when the corpse of Carlos Gonzalez finished his MLB career with 15 mostly forgettable games over a month as a Cub. He went to spring training with the Mariners the following year but never made it even to a minor league regular season game.

My first thought was he'd never make it out of spring training. But, it would be great theater if he got 100 ab standing outside the batters box dribbling it to first (off the juice) with his mechanically defective swing batting .120 spewing out his leadership rah rah bs.

He ran into a couple this year but has basically still sucked. Under 200 again.
It'll be interesting to see how long he stays on this team, but I guess he's a super cheap defensive replacement.

Have any Chicago athletes been given more of a pass than Heyward and Fields? I guess the jury is still out on Fields, but for Heyward they returned “guilty on all counts” long ago.
