They are waiting for the work stoppage next year. The player who made the most money in 2020 was Jacoby Ellsbury because the Yankees released him from his last year of his contract before the work stoppage for COVID, so he got his full 162 game salary. If they had tossed him on the 60-day IL instead, he would have been prorated.

Your work stoppage point is a good one, and that factor often gets over looked by the average fan.

Going into a potential disaster of a prolonged worked stoppage that radically changes the landscape of the sport, with a bare bones payroll is a smart overall move in my opinion. It may look ugly and indefensible now to some, but clearing the books of lengthy financial commitments in the short term and then re-evaluate when the mushroom cloud settles is probably in the organizations best interest for the next 3-5 years and beyond

I've changed my mind on this after the trade deadline. If he would like to retire, Jed should give him the fancy press conference and then put him on the restricted/voluntarily retired list and not pay him.

But if he wants to get paid, he has to do his job which is to pitch 4 innings every fifth day to reduce the number of innings their young starters (Adzolay, Steele, Thompson, and theoretically Marquez but he may not pitch at all this year) are having to go out there and throw.

Adzolay should get three or four more starts, and after that the first time he goes six innings and only gives up one run they should shut him down for the year and get him ready for next spring.

Keep him going in the rotation. Easy money betting the team he's pitching against.

Guys washed up who had integrity, and pride in their performance used to retire in-season. Now they make so much that's all they care about and ride it out to the bitter ugly end.
