No word on return yet.

Zach McKinstry. Utility guy they tried to put into the Kike Hernandez mold. Got injured with an oblique and lost his roster spot and has been hitting very well at AAA.

Figure we will see him on August 3 if either Happ or Wisdom gets traded. (Madrigal will take Contreras' roster spot.)

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired infielder Zach McKinstry from the Los Angeles Dodgers for right-handed pitcher Chris Martin.

McKinstry, 27, has played in 74 career major league games over three seasons with the Dodgers, going 37-for-176 (.210) with 10 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI. During his most extensive major league time in 2021, McKinstry batted .296 (16-for-54) with five doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI in April, with all three home runs and 11 RBI coming in a 10-game span from April 3-14. He has seen time at right field (27 games), second base (23 games), left field (15 games), third base (13 games), designated hitter (four games) and shortstop (1 game) in his MLB career.

The six-foot, 180-pound McKinstry has split time between the Dodgers and Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2022. In 48 games with Oklahoma City this season, he is hitting .335 (64-for-191) with nine doubles, four triples, four home runs, 25 RBI and 27 walks, contributing to a .417 on-base percentage and a .904 OPS. His .335 average ranks second among Pacific Coast League players with at least 200 plate appearances.

a decent return for a 36 yr old journeyman reliever.

Chris Martin might be Cy Young to Boog. But, a 4.31 era journeyman only gets some payroll relief from a .210 career hitter. Zach McKinstry is a tanking asset.

You are not going to get much for a 36 yr old journeyman. They could probably get some kid at a low level that will never amount to anything, or they can get a guy like McKinstry who could use a change of scenery and may be a bench player utility guy at some point.

This is not a bad move at all. Martin was brought in solely to be flipped at the deadline and they are lucky he was healthy enough to do just that after his start to the season. He wasn't all that great either this year. I have no problem with the pickup. Its better than adding a low end prospect to what is a pretty solid minor league system. This guy can play all over the field and has hit well in the high minors. His power has translated but his average not so much in his minimal time with the big league team. He has a La Stella vibe to him and I believe 4 or 5 years of control still if he pans out.

For what?

You don't trade great players. Stop feeding the media frenzy.

They're going to end up "stuck" with Contreras or trading him at a huge discount. That would make it embarrassing.

If they keep him and let him walk in FA they get a comp pick, probably better than the shit prospect they will get back.

Happ maybe. No way does CONEtreras sign an extension when he's this close to FA and the Cubs are nowhere near close to competing.

Cubs relievers have the 20th ranked era now. Will be even worse. 2nd ranked most innings per game. Ross will continue to change pitchers frequently. Now he'll be doing it with the near or worst MLB bullpen. Many more tank losses, postgame presser praise-fests all is well, love the effort...

With no OF moves I don't see a spot for J-Hey.

Happ has another year anyways. The fact they couldn't get more than the value of a comp pick for Willson is awful.

The way Contreras and happ have been bawling and carrying on the last week they should be THRILLED for the chance to stay in the city that so clearly means so much to them. Unless the were both totally full of shit. I though Happ was gonna cry on Bernstein and Holmes this afternoon.

Jed must have some type of plan at catcher or is going to try and re-sign Wily. They could have drafted that guy in the 1st round and passed. They also have shit for prospects at that position in the minors. Amaya is back playing but he has been gone for so long he doesn't really count anymore until he plays a full season.

They didn't have to move Happ so that doesn't bother me. He has played very well this year. If they would sign some damn players in the off season they might start to improve next year and be decent in 2024.

Oh I’d be surprised if they don’t make a legitimate effort to sign him now.

If they're just going to rely on the prospects they acquired and their draft picks, this rebuild is going to take seven years. They're going to have bring on some established major league help. Therefore, if they like Contreras, they should just sign him.

Exactly what happened, this front office makes me sick. I've watched less than 20 innings in 2 years.

What about the multiple recent crying jags? He'd choose millions over culture & camaraderie?

They didn't even try to make a deal with him. He would be foolish to go back.
