if you expected this team to be above .500 this year, you were kidding yourself. They actually overachieved. Now they've got to make the right moves for next year but they should have higher expectations for next season. That the division is so bad shouldn't matter for next year.

They are landing right where I expected them to land 83-84 wins, and probably eliminated in the last week.

The sequencing is frustrating, because they have been very streaky and hit the bad streak the second half of September. Ultimately, they won some July and August series which they shouldn't have, and the adrenaline wore off while the injuries kicked in and they lost some September series they should have won.

Now they have to invest this off-season to keep up with the Reds, or else they are going to be a third place team next season.

True, but with Votto's contract gone they have a hell of a mostly pre-arb infield with Encarnacion-Strand, de la Cruz, McClain, and India. Figure that's going to be at least $35M cheaper than the Cubs 2024 starting infield.
