I agree with B&B,Quade will be fine as Cubs manager. Ryno was a very good, sometimes great player who was a tad overrated. The guy never said boo as a player and never got his jersey dirty either. He suddenly reinvents himself (as a hothead manager) and makes an ass out of himself by getting tossed in one of the biggest games in the Iowa Cubs season. The team failed to make the playoffs. Ryno thought by being DITKA would get him more noticed,I guess. Sorry Ryno.

Never really heard the alleged outcry for Sandberg?

I blame Hendry more for Ryno even being in the picture?

He offered Ryno a job he didnt think he would take and it was evident from the start the guy was going to stick with it, so you promoted him every single year after that?

And with all this you didnt see the possible situation you would have been in ???

If you really didnt want the guy to be your coach, why continue to promote him?

All that being said, I think it would be a great idea to have the guy as a 3rd base coach. Seems to fit in with the style of younger players the Cubs have and he knows many of them pretty well. If it happens fine, as long as Quade makes the call and not anyone else.

Quade will do a fine job managing. I just don't understand the idea that Sandberg wouldn't have because he didn't coach third base first. That's asinine. Dusty Baker and Lou Piniella were established managing commodities at the major league level and they were fuckups. Over in Phoenix, A.J. Hinch went from helping with scouting to managing without doing any managing or coaching anywhere before (Diamond Del Negro?) and he was a fuckup. There's no reliable way of gauging which experience where will help or hinder, because field manager is an essentially useless role. Now, Sandberg's managing career in the minors has been promising, but so has Quade's, so he wins the job on merit, and I respect that. I didn't want Sandberg to get the gig if it meant hoisting the white flag and going with the Come Watch The Manager plan of failure.

Like I said before, it reminds me of arguing over whether presidents should come from the federal legislature or the governors' offices.

Sorry, I can't support cheap ass Ricketts for hiring Quade. It is clear however that both Hendry and Quade already have 1 foot out the door. That was evident by the look on Hendry's face. Ricketts claims Hendry made the hire so when Quade doesn't produce results, both will be shit canned.

What is this nonsense about having to have coached 3rd base? In the minor leagues you will never guess what managers do while their team is up to bat.....They coach 3rd base.

B&B have been pushing all along that if you don't coach in the bigs, preferably at third base, you're unfit to ascend to MLB manager. Hiring a fan favorite to manage the team instead of hiring a more experienced manager is exactly what the White Sox did when they hired Ozzie Guillen over Cito Gaston, but since Ozzie coached third base for the Marlins, he was a prime candidate, whereas Sandberg's three years of being field manager amount to nothing. Oh, and by playing for Atlanta while Bobby Cox was there, he was "learning to manage all the time." Yeah, for that year and a half. By that logic, Chipper Jones will one day be the greatest manager of all time.

It's bad enough that it's a fallacious argument rooted in White Sox love, it's worse still that a certain poster here has pounced on it and regurgitated the point more times than a bulimic in solitary.

Mike fucking Quade is the Cubs Manager. Really? A life long journeyman coach who no one else thought was worthy of being the top guy is now in charge of the Cubs instead of the guy who went through the company training program & who was groomed for the job. Wow.
Shame on Tom Ricketts for letting Jim Hendry remain employed by the Cubs. The Cubs organization is as fucked up as the Bears with both teams having guys running their clubs who don't know anything about their sport, in Kenny & Phillips. I knew Ricketts was the blue light special owner but this is ridiculous. As a life long Cubs fan I say fuck you to Ricketts, Kenny & Hendry. I hope there is a backlash & Wrigley is empty next year. Fuckers.

Well, thats exactly what it was. Ryno took the single A job, then proceeded to win at every level & got promoted 2 times. If ever there was a clear defined career path it was Ryno's. There isn't anything that Mike Quade knows about baseball that Ryno doesn't. It's just a shame that Jim Hendry still is employed & has authority to make decisions for the Cubs. If Ricketts had any balls he would have told Hendry to hire Sandberg.

I don't listen often to B&B, but if they said that they are baseball retarded.
You have two main jobs as third base coach, wave runners in/or hold and relay signs to hitters and base runners.

A manager's job description does not include waving runners in from second, so how does being good at waving runners in or holding them up improve the performance of being a manager.

and regarding the second job, relaying signs, the Bears QB coach relays plays from Martz to Cutler. Using B&B rationale does that mean the QB coach (whoever he is) is qualified to be a head coach?

Bernsie is pulling the contrarian act again, IMHO. They should have hired Sandberg. The guy played the game the right way for this organization. He went to the minors, managed well, knows the talent, and should have the respect of the players based on his stature. I'd rather lose with Sandberg at the helm than Quade. I'd also rather succeed with Sandberg at the helm than Quade (better story). And I think the Cubs have a better chance overall with Sandberg.

He proved he could win in the minors.
He would hold people accountable, while I question whether Quade will.
He knows the game, and I suspect Quade does too.
He knows the minor league talent.
He has the respect of Cubs fan, which will give him more time to turn things around. Quade will be blasted after his first 3 game losing streak.
He will have a better standing with veterans and rookies.

All my opinion, but that is my logic.
