He is coming off a great year, but he has had some up & down years. Should the Cubs pursue him? They have to pop for one superstar before the Cubs convention. A Cliff Lee or/and a Konerko signing would be a nice holiday present for Cub fans.

Yes for at least 4 years, $60M and six no-trade clauses (yeah, I know you only need one but this is Paulie for god sakes!)

The Cubs are not going to sign a major free agent this offseason because they have no money.

No shit. Probably a team with an actual chance to win a title.

Yeah, because the Cubs division has some monster talent, right. The Reds might revert to being a punching bag again next year. The Cubs have as good a chance as any.

How much of a contract would you offer Konerko jimmy?

How about one year for 5 million more then he made last year? I'm not into big,long,no-cut contracts. That's how the Cubs (and many others) are screwed. IF I did sign talent to a long term contract, every year (or 2) would have an option for a buy-out. The club has to be protected.

This is the first year in many that I've liked the Sox talent better than the Cubs. They should sign Paulie to a HT discount, go after a guy like Beltre who isn't gonna get the money he's hoping for, and with that staff and adding some relievers? They have a shot.

Konerko will get a longer than one year deal from a team this offseason

The last thing the Cubs need is another high priced aging veteran. I like Paulie, but he should stay on the south side.

I think the Sox sign Paulie to a 2 year deal with a club option 3rd.

Right now the Cubs have a hole at 1st. Is the plan to move Soriano and put Colvin in LF?

Interestingly enough, the Sox have around $82M committed to 12 guys and that doesn't include Danks, Konerko, Quentin, a closer, a catcher (assuming they don't go with Castro), or a DH. So, depending on their revenue projections, Uncle Jerry may not have the money.

My guess is you're getting a guy for under $10M such as Huff, Overbay, Cantu, or the like.

Ding. If I had to bet I would say Overbay.

I think you're looking at the bargain bin here, this isn't exactly a marquee crop of free agents. And most of the big spenders will save their 1B beans for a run next year at Pujols, AGon or Fielder. So a bunch of lowball or 1 year offers will be out there, so a shrewd GM could sell a veteran on the atmosphere.

Might want to kick the tires on some of these guys:

C Pena-- how about a 1B who hit under .200?
Berkman-- he looks to be fading, but could rebound
LaRoche-- will drive in a few runs but might be looking for more than Cubs are looking to spend
Aubrey Huff-- see LaRoche
Cantu-- for some reason couldn't hit in Texas
Nick Johnson-- hurty and bad, but lefthanded
Overbay-- seems to have doubles power at this point

Technically, Berkman has the most talent, but he was bad in New York.

Fat Elvis is old and ouchy too no thanks. If the Cubs were to actually spend the money I would like to see them get Dunn. But since I don't think they will I think you can pencily Lyle Overbay into the 6 hole of your Cubs lineup for the next year. He's a lefty after all.

Jimbo, if it was up to Ricketts, he would have a payroll similar to the Pirates...which may actually be the case in a couple of years. The Cubs aren't signing anyone.

Cmon now. Get your heads in the game people. To even consider this team adding a Dunn or Konerko is absurd. Do you know who is probably to expensive and old for this team? Nick fucking Johnson. If someone in that front office has any sense of intelligence then they should probably rape the shit out of the rule 5 draft since the open roster spots and non competitive nature of next year's team will serve as a thriving environment for unprotected minor league players that will be good but no other team would want on their mlb roster yet. They should also be prepared to pick up some players that are out of options and get placed on waivers right out of spring training. There are avenues available to teams trying to build on the cheap. Hopefully they take advantage.

I think you are right BUT the Cubs should chase at least one big name. I would prefer a SP.

Actually....here is your 2010 first baseman. Casey Kotchman. He is cheap, plays good D, used to hit on occasion and no one wants him. Enjoy.
