LOS ANGELES -- Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney went into spring training competing for a spot on the team. He earned a spot in the starting lineup, and Tuesday was named National League Rookie of the Month for April.

Barney hit .326 with one home run and 14 RBIs in April, with four doubles, a pair of triples and 15 runs scored. Unfortunately for Barney, he is not on the All-Star ballot. The Cubs listed Blake DeWitt, not Barney, as their starting second baseman when asked by MLB before the season began.

"It's nothing that's ever been on my mind," Barney said Monday night.

Tampa Bay, however, was able to substitute outfielder Sam Fuld on the All-Star ballot for Manny Ramirez, who retired last month after failing a drug test.

A guy in my office picked him up in our fantasy league last week. He's 1 for his last 25 or something

Just shows how bad our pitching has been. I don't know anyone who thought Barney would get off to this good of a start.

Before the season started, if you had Aramis', Starlin's, Darwin's and Alfonoso's stats, you would have predicted the Cubs 5-6 games over .500

Take a close look at Kosuke's trend over the last 4 years starting in May and tell me if you still want him 3rd. By July you'd want him straight up released. He's notorious for a solid April, a decent May, a dragging June, a lagging July, a sagging august and straight up September impotence.

We all know he hits well early in a season and drops off late.

Starlin Castro's development is of the ultimate importance, and in the three hole he looks like he is taking too many big cuts and trying to do too much. His approach at the top of the order was different, you can visually tell as much.

I think we all know that Koskue isn't a number 3 hitter. But the problem is nobody on this Cubs roster is really a decent number 3 so no matter who they put there it is not going to be the best fit.

Yes. I think he was really the worst guy for the job. He's way overmatched by just about anyone he plays against. He's got his hottest power hitter in Soriano batting 6th, his best leadoff hitter in years batting 3rd, and none of this says "Smart Fella" to me.
I think Quade is a VDN type coach, a placeholder, not a serious manager.

I don't think Quade is the greatest manager in the world but you could bring in mid 70's Sparky Anderson and he isn't going to be storming the castle with the players on the Cubs roster either. Soriano should NOT be hitting above 6th even if he is off to a hot start.

No because he will change his approach and strike out more hitting 3rd. If you haven't seen that Soriano is a streaky hitter but one that can't really be trusted facing a good reliever in a big spot at the end of a game. Soriano is not a 3 hitter no matter how hot of a start he gets off to. Even with all of the Homers I think he is still has an OBP under .300

I'm just advocating the hottest hitter of the month that's all. When he starts his whiff parade, feel free to move Pena and his .150 average back into the power slot.

EDIT: Ideally, I would prefer Ramirez to bat 3rd.

I could go back and find the thread where I began banging the drum for batting A-Ram third but I don't feel like it. If you scroll up a few posts you will see that I think all Cubs fans agree that the real problem is there is no traditional 3 hitter on this team as it is constructed at the moment. Hendry is a fat bully.

Soriano's stats are really interesting this year. He has a very low BABIP of .235, but a crazy high HR/FB ratio of 28%. Basically he should be hitting more singles/doubles but less homeruns which is what we can expect moving forward.

His strikeout rate is very high at 25% this year, I tend to agree with Phil about keeping him 6th/7th.

His career stats batting 3rd is 260/310/450 while batting 6th is 275/326/516
