Longest streak in MLB without being no-hit.

When was the last time the Cubs were on the wrong end of a no-hitter? It was 46 years ago tonight, and the feat was a perfect game, courtesy of Sandy Koufax who beat the Cubs 1-0 at Dodger Stadium.

WGN wasn't televising night games on the West Coast in those days which is why there's no footage of Koufax's feat. Lost in the fog of a Koufax no-hitter for the fourth straight year was a brilliant effort by Cubs journeyman Bob Hendley, who gave up one hit and walked only one. The Dodgers scored the only run of the game when Lou Johnson walked to lead off the 5th and went to second on a Ron Fairly sacrifice (a bunt where Hendley may have had a play at second). Johnson then stole 3rd and scored on an error and that was all Koufax needed. He struck out 14, including Chris Krug, Joey Amalfitano, and Harvey Kuenn for the last out of the game.

Koufax almost gave up a hit to the second batter of the game when Glenn Beckert hit a screaming drive just foul down the left field line. Beckert struck out and then was asked for some advice by his roommate, a story that never gets old.

"I've been known to say a lot of things at the wrong time," said Beckert. "He struck me out in the first inning and I hated that. Before, I had hit a line drive down the left field line that missed being in by maybe an inch. I thought, jeez I had that one. So Santo says, 'Rooms, what's he got?' I said, 'We've got him tonight. He's not throwing anything.' Well, a perfect game is a lot to throw! Santo tells that story all the time, but I can't get out of it. It's the truth."

I thought someone on the Reds no-hit the Cubs at Wrigley since then. Obviously I'm wrong.
