Is it possible we misunderstood Steve Stone? "in time" meant year 4.

By the way, Rizzo is back in the lead and comfortably increasing it with each game played.

With all the excitement of making three straight NLCS, we forgot to update this thread.

Abreu wins this season. Tied 2-2!

We'll see if Stone was right next year!

I know it's kind of a joke but at this point, neither can be far superior to the other. They are close. Stone was wrong. First time for everything.

I was updating the other thread.

While you are correct in that it is 2-2 in the specific framework of the discussion, Rizzo has a higher OPS over those four years.

.910 to .883

Healthy margin of superiority over Abreu.

The club has decided to rebuild apparently and that may be the best decision. If a rebuild is under way, why pick up Rizzo's option? Why didn't they allow him to catch on with a contender, while saving themselves a substantial salary and pick up someone with a much lower salary that was dumped by another team (non tendered) ? Trade Hendricks, Darvish and Bryant and load the minor league system again. The run is over and there is no sense in half asking 2021.

Picking up Rizzo's option was an easy call:

1. Someone has to play 1B. If they trade Bryant, they have nobody in the system of any value. For a few games a year they can patch things up with Caratini and Happ, but not for a full season.
2. He signed a team friendly deal because of his off field health concerns. He has been a model citizen and the face of the franchise. He is the anti-Bryant. Cutting him loose in the middle of the most turbulent off season there has been in years is a Jerry Krause "organizations win championships" move.
3. He will have value as a rental at the trade deadline. If the NL has the DH and the Marlins are in contention, that is a perfect landing place for him in exchange for young pitching. They can sign him to an extension to finish his career with his hometown club. But even if the Marlins don't work out, there will be several clubs who could use him for a playoff push, and the Cubs should be able to get a young starter not yet on the 40 man.

Rizzo is the new Mr. Cub. After he retires he's setup for a TV/Radio gig with the Cubs and all the marketing that comes with it.

sounds like NL is going back to pitchers hitting. agree on the midseason rental deal. cubs might be able to swing a little more young talent coming back their way.

There was a good jomboy piece about a deal the yankees and braves almost made years back that would sent judge and a couple others to ATL for Heyward and a couple others.
