Cubs reach 5-year extension with Bote. World Series, here we come!!!! :?

"The Cubs announced they have reached an agreement on a five-year extension (through 2024) for infielder David Bote that includes two club options.

A source said the deal will total $15 million over the term of the deal. The club has not commented on the dollar amount.

The announcement was made by President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein."

That's not a terrible deal, kids.

$3mil on average for someone that they're hoping is their next Zobrist, no? And there's two club options, so he's not guaranteed the full sum.

It's not exciting news, but it isn't bad news so I'm okay with it.

Insurance for when Bryant walks? Oh wait he's more of an OF than a 3B these days...

 I’m glad for him I guess cuz that’s good paper for someone who isn’t much of an MLB player and probably never will be BUT , would 15 million get you 1 year of Kimbrel ?

Fair. Then again, until the compensation pick period ends, nobody's signing him for any amount of money.

Any chance they are looking to trade Bryant to re-stock the farm system and avoid a Harper-like contract?

If they have to pick between Bryant and Baez, I think they choose Baez. I don't think they sign Baez and Bryant to 300MIL contracts.

He’s replacing Zobrist. The other guys aren’t coming up on FA that soon.

Bote wasn't even a free agent until 2025. He apparently approached the team about an extension.

That's a hell of a commitment to a came-outta-nowhere utility infielder.

He is not as good as Zobrist on his best day. Move makes zero sense. Farm system should be full of utility players.

Yeah, he's just a guy. Unnecessary move.

It's fine. It is a message to Happ and Russell: we will trade your sorry asses to a bottom dweller in exchange for prospects if you don't shape up.

When they fail to address the bullpen issues and complain about money, but then extend a very average utility player. Yes, we will voice our displeasure.

They also have Nico on the fast track to the bigs and Happ is a pretty good talent when not batting with a blindfold. They have to be planning on doing something with someone.

I think this is evidence that it is not.

They need Zobrist’s money to pay for other positions. Not about good.

Nothing like worrying about extending a average utility player, when you have a bullpen that is a shit show.

Yeah I was hoping to get some enlightenment here but that’s my takeaway. Good for Bote I guess.

This move says a lot. Their plan A is crumbling. Now it's cost saving plan B moves. I don't ever remember a unproven guy of Bote's ilk being extended. He's steady, has a flair for the heroics, but nothing spectacular. He is the best the farm has produced recently though. I'd take him over Heyward. I'm thinking this signals if they spend big in future years it will be to retain not acquire. The Cubs arent going to be the Yankees and eat bad big money regularly. I think the last save of plan A was to unload Heyward during the off-season and eat some of his bad money. Looks like plan B moving forward.

Bote; Hey, I'm like a 5th infielder, can I get some money?
Cubs; Sure!
Craig Kimbrel; Hey, I'm an All Star close and your bullpen sucks, can I get some money?
Cubs; Go away, we don't have any to give you!
