So Beane was "talking up" Russell to get increased trade value? Too bad the Cubs have not thought of doing the same thing with regards to their prospects.

Go Cubs!

So he's a Hall of Famer.

Better than Sosa?

In his full seasons with the Cubs, he had a combined OPS of .936.

Sosa was a great offensive player. Anyone remember Sosa having 40 HR's prior to breaking his wrist that one year? The raw talent was always there. Even back in those early Sox years.

I loved Sosa in those "Panther" days, as infuriating as he may have been.

You'll need to declare which one is the Cub fan now. They both can't be by your logic.

It's Gonna Happen guy is a lifelong Cubs fan with a family who has had season tickets through two generations. I think he can be used as a good barometer

I thought the It's Gonna Happen guy was the bro that ran out of the stands and tried to punch Randy Myers.

Not sure who it was, but that was not developed or marketed by the Cubs. You are correct about that.

Pretty sure that's why the Cubs got particularly mad about that one.

You are correct Doc.

You know that annoying guy we keep seeing at Cubs games sticking his "It's Gonna Happen" sign in front of the camera? The guy who also keeps popping up outside the ballpark, and is now also selling shirts with the ambiguous catchphrase? Well that guy's name is John Murray. He's also the knucklehead who ran onto the field and rushed Cubs closer Randy Myers.

Mike North on Chicago radio station 670 The Score and guest Steve Stone recently poked fun at the slogan as being ambiguous and allowing for anything. North said, "When I see a Cubs fan holding up a sign that says 'It's Gonna Happen' I think of bad things." But that was before either of them knew of the past of Murray.

On September 28, 1995, Cubs closer Randy Myers gave up a go ahead home run to the Astros' James Mouton. As Myers was being yanked from the game, Murray stormed onto the field and ran up to Myers to yell at him. Myers, a former black belt in karate, performed what teammate Shawon Dunston described as "one of those martial arts moves" and pinned Murray until security arrived. Murray was escorted out of the park and was eventually banned from Wrigley Field for one year.

Aww, he hit a double off of the wall. That isn't a home run.

Kris Bryant is disappointing.

Huh? They're both Cub fans.

bernstein is a longtime Cub fan who pretends to be a Sox fan on the radio. One of his bits is his "childhood" hero who played for the Sox when he was 17-20 , Ivan Calderon. The bit juxtaposes the journeyman Calderon with Cub greats like Ernie and Billy in order to poke fun at the futility of White Sox.

Spiegel grew up a Red Sox fan. I'm sure he still roots for them, but he's in Chicago and has adopted the Cubs as his new team. If you asked him who he'd root for in a World Series, I'm sure his answer would be something like, "I don't care. I'd be in baseball heaven."

But Dan has always hated all the ancillary Cubdom things. He hated Ron Santo and thinks Ed Farmer calls a better game than Pat Hughes does. He cares so little about Wrigley Field that he'd be happy if the name were sold. He hates Steve Goodman's songs about the Cubs and alleges not to know who Steve Goodman even is. He has recently intimated upon the man's death that the team's most beloved player was a grifter and an Uncle Tom, though not in those exact words. He hates the cargo-shorted, collar-popping, beer-swilling yuppies who go to the games. Come to think of it, hey, I hate those people too, but none of that other stuff -- especially the part about Pat Hughes, what the fuck. But at the same time, his love for all the things the Chicago Cubs organization itself does cannot be matched. It's either hard to figure out or not hard at all. The situation remains fluid.

I don't suppose it's any different from considering Ryan Theriot or Andrew Shaw your favorite player. With Calderon, you got to adore a scrappy journeyman whom lesser fans wouldn't think to appreciate and not have it be a white guy.

I remember it like he was gonna take over for Baines or he was next up (didn't know Harold would play so long and with the white sox again)

Maybe its Hipster pride on Bernstein's part (I liked the less popular team)

Bernsie's Calderon thing back then was a bit. He was all into his looks and chains and so on. Any fan back then was a Fisk, Guillen or Baines guy before Calderon.

Dunston would be my Ivan Calderone if I was a White Sox fan pretending to be a Cub fan while really being a White Sox fan pretending to love the Cubs since the formative age of 19.

I am thinking we keep this Bryant kid around!

I know Scott Boras doesnt believe in early signings but, an early signing for Bryant might come with $100 +mill locked in and I cant imagine his dad, a baseball lifer, would let the kid pass that up.

If it was my kid....we are going to figure out something as the chance to never worry about money for generations is on table, you get a deal done.

That's bullshit. He's no gold glover, but his defense is fine. He has improved greatly and is probably average at 3rd at this point. Honestly, I like Baez at 3rd best, with Bryant in the outfield where I think he does a better job and his speed is better utilized. But now that Soler is back, it's a matter of whether they use Castro at 2nd and Baez at 3rd with Bryant in the outfield, or Bryant at 3rd, Baez at 2nd and Soler in the outfield.

Jesus. Please tell me what a fan needs to see in his team before he can want his team to win World Series.

It's not about wanting. It's about knowing. You just know it. Like you knew it with Baylor and Baker and Piniella and Orie and Scott and Pagel and Ty Griffin. It's gonna happen.

It happened.
